About the Role
Alumni Ventures seeks an Investment Professional to join its Japan-based team, focusing initially on the Japan-US Bridge Fund. The role title will be aligned with the candidate's background (3–8+ years experience). This is a fully in-person role (5 days/week) based in Tokyo, with travel within Japan, Asia, and periodic US visits. Alumni Ventures will support relocation but cannot provide visa sponsorship in Japan.
Deal Sourcing & Ecosystem Development
- Identify and source Seed-stage investment opportunities across Japan and select Asian markets
- Build relationships with founders, angel investors, seed funds, incubators, accelerators, universities, and institutional LPs
- Leverage AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity) for research, trend identification, and deal flow enhancement
- Represent the firm at industry events and conferences
- Help develop Alumni Ventures' regional visibility
Initial Screening & Evaluation
- Conduct first-round screening including founder interviews and market assessment
- Evaluate team quality, traction, market size, and competitive positioning
- Use AI for accelerated market research and preliminary analysis
- Develop investment summaries for US-based investment professionals
Diligence & Investment Process
- Coordinate full diligence with the US investment team
- Apply AI workflows to financial review and comparable analysis
- Support investment memo preparation
- Assist in transaction execution
Portfolio Support
- Maintain relationships with portfolio companies
- Evaluate follow-on investment opportunities
- Support founders accessing international capital
- Track ecosystem trends and competitive dynamics
Requirements
- 3–8+ years in venture capital, investment banking, consulting, or early-stage startups
- Knowledge of the Japanese startup ecosystem (preferred)
- US VC exposure preferred
- Fluent in Japanese and English (both required)
- Must be currently authorized to work in Japan (no visa sponsorship available)
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred
- Genuine fluency with AI tools
- Willing to travel within Japan, Asia, and internationally
