Build Ventures

Build Ventures is a Halifax, Nova Scotia-based venture capital firm that provides early-stage capital to technology companies across Atlantic Canada. Its mandate is regionally concentrated: it backs founders building and growing companies in the Atlantic provinces, addressing a market in which early-stage capital and network access are comparatively scarce.

The firm has closed two funds. Build Ventures I, its first investment vehicle, closed in 2013 and provided early-stage capital to Atlantic Canadian technology companies. Build Ventures II closed in 2019, continuing the same strategy of early-stage investment in emerging technology companies in the region. The investment focus spans software, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on seed and early-stage venture financing.

Beyond capital, the firm describes its approach as providing network access and practical support to founders as they build and scale. It also publishes public commentary on issues facing early-stage companies, including fundraising, customer traction and the composition and function of startup boards - subjects that reflect its day-to-day engagement with portfolio founders.
