About

We invest in innovative, early-stage, founder-led companies that tend to be escape the notice of the big East and West Coast venture capital firms. Many of these companies have the potential to contribute to the economic growth of Oklahoma through job creation and affiliations with the University of Oklahoma ecosystem, its alumni and other Oklahomans.

We're committed not only to driving economic growth, but to generating above-average returns for our investors. We do this by investing at attractive prices, and by providing guidance and support to our portfolio companies - innovative firms competing in the fast-growing Life Sciences, HealthTech, FinTech, and Infrastructure Tech sectors.

We pursue above-average returns in three ways:

  1. Competitive Pricing: Because our portfolio companies tend to escape the notice of larger VCs, they're unlikely to be over-bid and over-priced.
  2. Venture Studio by BSV: We and our Venture Studio by BSV provide de-risking strategic and operational guidance designed to help our portfolio companies avoid costly mistakes, get to market sooner, scale faster, and exit more profitably.
  3. Follow-Ons: Whenever possible, we make follow-on investments in those portfolio companies that are demonstrating especially exceptional performance and the potential for truly exceptional returns.

Our Founders

Founder & General Partner James Spann and Co-Founder & Strategic Advisor Jeff Moore saw that promising startups from the University of Oklahoma and elsewhere in the state were failing to get to market for one primary reason: a lack of access to venture capital, most of which was located on the East and West Coasts. In 2016, they concluded that the only solution was to open a venture capital firm in OU’s home city of Norman. And in 2021, after five years of planning, they did precisely that.

The University of Oklahoma

BSV is proud and fortunate to enjoy a unique relationship with OU:

  • Our headquarters is located across Boyd Street from OU’s beautiful campus.
  • Our Founder James Spann is an OU alum and has been Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board for OU’s Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering since 2015.
  • Our Co-Founder Jeff Moore has been Executive Director of OU’s Ronnie K. Irani Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth since 2010.
  • BSV frequently collaborates with OU’s institutions and schools.
  • BSV employs numerous OU interns each year.

Elm Street Ventures

Since 2006 we’ve backed Yale faculty doing cutting edge research on some of the world’s largest problems. With Yale as our largest investor, we’ve supported teams developing much-needed therapeutics, advanced tools and materials for industry, and critical interventions for a warming planet. Our thesis is that great people and great science lead to great impact. YALE AND NEW HAVEN We are primarily interested in companies with a Yale connection, typically technology developed at and licensed from Yale. We also invest in companies located in the greater New Haven area, and, in exceptional cases, non-Yale/non-New Haven companies in which we have strong, personal connections to the founders or investors or where we can add substantial value. INVESTING IN PEOPLE In making investment decisions, we weigh the strength of the team as much as the technology or markets being addressed – often more. We look for creative thinking, high intelligence, passion, and a deep commitment to working hard for success. Building great businesses takes time and hard work. THERE AT THE START We are interested in investing as early as a good idea comes together, or later, as the team is formed and the business develops. We have been co-founders of a number of our portfolio companies, and find that the most rewarding (and hardest) thing we do. We typically make first investments of $500,000 to $1 million, and, if a company is tracking well, look to invest an additional $2 to $2.5 million over multiple financing rounds. We are happy to syndicate with other investors who share our views and approach to investing.

As part of our ongoing commitment to women and diversity, we’ve dedicated a total of $40 million to investing in startup companies founded by women and Black entrepreneurs. This funding allocation will advance the company’s investment strategy of engaging startups whose technologies have the potential to transform how clients experience financial security, as well as increase focus on technological disruption. The investment criteria align with NM Future Ventures' key strategic areas of focus.

Radical Ventures

Like Benjamin Franklin knotting a key to a kite in a lightning storm, today’s AI researchers are unlocking technology that is reshaping our world. From quantum neural networks and transformers for NLP, to AI for drug discovery, the path to future innovations and commercialization is charted by a small subset of the global technology talent pool, the elite AI researchers. Coalescing around the pioneers of AI, including Toronto’s “godfather of deep learning” Geoffrey Hinton, this AI talent pool has laid the foundations for innovation and rapid commercialization. Radical is both a product of the Canada AI ecosystem and one of its architects. Radical founders Jordan Jacobs and Tomi Poutanen helped co-author the world’s first national AI strategy and conceived of and co-founded the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, alongside Geoffrey Hinton, Ed Clark and others in 2017. Vector began with 8 faculty and is now home to over 1700 of the world’s top AI researchers. Before Radical, Jordan and Tomi founded Milq in 2011 and then spun-out Layer 6 AI in 2016, an AI prediction platform company later acquired by TD Bank, where they became co-Chief AI Officers. As founders, ecosystem builders and investors, the Radical team has played an active role in nurturing the next generation of AI innovation and commercialization. Just as Thomas Edison would build upon Franklin’s discoveries, now is the moment to capitalize on the opportunity afforded by innovations in AI. Every facet of our economy and lives stand to benefit from breakthroughs in AI. Like today’s electrical grid, AI will soon power nearly every human interaction with technology. Lightning to light bulb. That is the transformative moment we are investing in.
