Oxford Science Enterprises

About

It all starts with our academic founders; we have profound respect for their inventions and relentless entrepreneurial zeal.

We see complex, cutting-edge ideas before others, shape and nurture them into successful businesses and back them all the way to exit, providing access to specialists and start-of-the-art lab and start-up space, we go well beyond funding.

Actively focused on a core portfolio of around 40 companies spanning three high-growth sectors – Life Sciences, Health Tech and Deep Tech – we adopt a flexible, long-term investment approach, recognising the path from ground-breaking research to global markets takes time and resilience.

HOW, WHAT AND WHEN WE INVEST

Our mandate is clear: we invest in companies that are part of the Oxford cluster (including the science parks and Saïd Business School), with a special focus on the University’s science departments.

We invest in spinouts at pre-seed and seed stage. Although we invest first, unlike many seed investors we also provide follow-on financing all the way to exit. On occasion, if the link to Oxford is strong, we will invest in existing companies.

We lead rounds and have written cheques as small as £50,000 and as big as £25m+.

HOW DO WE HELP?

To translate your inventions into successful businesses, we'll help get the right talent onto your team, advise on your first PR strategy, connect you with key co-investors and industry players, provide strategic property support, and guide you through critical funding and business milestones – we’re at your side at every stage of your journey.

WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR?

An ingenious invention tackling a multi-billion £ market opportunity that has the potential to attract the world’s best commercial and technical talent.

Foothill Ventures

Foothill Ventures is a technology-focused venture fund based in Los Altos, California. We make pre-seed, seed (preferred), and A-round investments in startups across software, life science, and deep tech. Our portfolio is very broad. We invest in 3 major areas. We invest in seed stage companies that demonstrate technical differentiation. This means that one of their major reasons for future success will be technical or product-level superiority SOFTWARE LIFE SCIENCES DEEP TECH What do we look for? Strong technical founders: Our first criteria is the quality of the founding team. In addition to favoring strong technologists, we look for a consistent past record of leadership success. Diverse founders: We have had great success betting on immigrant founders, female founders and PhD founders. When a founding team contains diversity among the founders, we tend to lean in. Cross-disciplinary approach: We believe that very large opportunities are created when two disciplines collide. Many of our top investments are in cross-disciplinary areas like autonomous vehicles and synthetic biology.

Invest-NL

The Netherlands needs to become more sustainable and more innovative. This requires dedication, patience and capital. But above all, it requires entrepreneurs - genuine entrepreneurs with genuinely good plans for the Netherlands of the future. We are here to finance those genuinely good plans. We are Invest-NL, impact investors, and we make tomorrow possible. Pleased to meet you! About us The Netherlands needs to become more sustainable and more innovative. We will make the difference. We aim to make an impact by seeking a return. We are not afraid to go for opportunities that others decide against. This is because we are prepared to take risks, we are able to wait longer for our money than others, and we have access to European funds. But also because we are passionate and motivated, we are professional and competent, and we believe in our mission. We provide encouragement, speed things up, create opportunities and remove obstacles. We enable financing for businesses and projects that seem impossible to finance. Rather than competing with others, we work together with them, and this enables us to achieve more than any of us could have done on our own. By taking risk ourselves, we reduce the risks for others. We are an open organisation that thinks broadly and looks ahead. When we look ahead to 2050, the economy we see is radically different from today’s economy. We see an economy that pays greater attention to people, the environment, society and our shared future. This cannot be achieved without major social transitions, confidence in opportunities and long-term thinking. This is something we are responsible for. The entrepreneurs who will create the Netherlands of tomorrow may only just be starting out. The technology that will be required is still in its infancy. This is where we come in and where we will make a difference. We cannot do this alone, nor would we want to. You are welcome to join us in achieving this aim. Welcome to the Netherlands of tomorrow. Focus areas Our ambition is to make the Netherlands more sustainable and more innovative. We aim to achieve this by financing projects and businesses, as well as by providing advice and/or carrying out research on how to enable financing for business cases. As an impact investor, we always focus on the social returns throughout the entire chain. This allows us to gain insight and expertise. This involves learning, making adjustments, reformulating, and refining. Our current market focus has six focus areas. Biobased & Circular Economy: The Netherlands' target is to be 50% circular by 2030 and 100% circular by 2050. We therefore view circularity as a social transition. We research and support the development of markets in which circular solutions can flourish, and we invest in companies that contribute towards these goals. Carbon-neutral economy: The transition to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050 requires radical innovations and is our top priority. AgriFood: The transition towards a sustainable, climate-neutral food system and value chain is key to our strategy. Radical innovations and an integrated strategy are required in order to work towards a circular model with innovative technologies and business models that can accelerate the transition. Deep Tech: For Deep Tech, we launched the specialised Deep Tech Fund (DTF). This fund is particularly interested in start-ups and scale-ups with innovative complex technology that offers solutions to societal challenges. Investments are often made in new, as yet unproven technologies that bear relatively high risks. Life sciences & health: The Dutch healthcare system is not sustainable in its current form. Without intervention, healthcare costs will double by 2040 and one in four Dutch people will have to work in healthcare. This calls for a transition to a different healthcare system. Investment funds: We want to give fast-growing SMEs (start-ups and scale-ups) more and improved access to risk capital. That is why we make investments, some of which are in collaboration with the European Investment Fund (EIF).
