American Express Ventures (Amex Ventures) is the corporate venture capital division of American Express. The team focuses on early-stage investments (primarily Seed through Series B) across fintech, commerce, consumer services, and enterprise software, with the goal of developing and executing long-term corporate strategic initiatives that contribute to American Express' market leadership and growth.
About the Role
The Portfolio Manager will be an integral part of the Ventures group, managing investment portfolio activity and deriving insights to help formulate fund strategy. The role plays a key part in portfolio reporting, setting efficient and repeatable processes, and executing portfolio-related transactions. Salary range: $103,750–$174,750 annually plus bonus and benefits.
Key Responsibilities
- Portfolio reporting including updates to the CFO and other senior management, as well as quarterly portfolio review processes
- Analyze data from the portfolio, market, and industry to help formulate investment strategy and provide insights to senior management
- Support setting financial targets for the fund and tracking performance against benchmarks, goals, and success metrics
- Maintain and manage the Ventures Portfolio database
- Document portfolio and transaction-related standards, methodologies, and processes to track investment returns
- Lead coordination across Finance, Legal, and Compliance and the broader Ventures team
- Serve as subject matter expert on deal navigation, term adjustments, and portfolio processes
- Develop investment theses and conduct market analysis
- Manage the full lifecycle of the deal pipeline from sourcing through portfolio monitoring
- Build financial models and valuations
- Support compliance teams and manage portfolio-related transactions
Requirements
- 4–6 years of previous experience in fields requiring in-depth financial analysis, deal execution, and business development
- Experience in venture capital, investment banking, strategic consulting, or startups preferred
- Strong financial, analytical, and valuation skills (a financial modeling assessment will be administered as part of the interview process)
- Strategic mindset with ability to influence stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills
- Interest in fintech, payments, and financial services
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA strongly preferred
- US work authorization required (no visa sponsorship)
