Techstars is looking to hire a Global Director of Media Relations to the Brand & Communications team to elevate the company’s visibility and highlight Techstars success as an investment business. The ideal candidate should wake up and be energized every day by securing media coverage and generating speaking and thought leadership opportunities for Techstars. Techstars is already one of the largest (and soon to be THE largest) pre-seed investors in the world with more than 3,300 companies in its portfolio - except most of the press (and their readers) within the VC, Tech and broader financial industries are not aware of Techstars impact.

The core responsibilities for this position include managing the end-to-end process associated with media relations and speaking opportunities for the CEO, the executive leadership team and other members of Techstars management. The candidate must have deep experience managing high profile media relations with a strong track record of pitching and placing stories with Global/U.S. financial and tech business media (particularly tier-one print, TV, radio and online).  

We are looking for a dynamic candidate who is a self-starter and can create processes that will help the organization build and scale over time. This individual will need to quickly embed themselves into the Techstars business by providing strategic oversight and counsel, designing end-to-end business communications activities and campaigns, while aligning with global brand.

This role reports directly to the Chief Brand & Communications Officer (CBCO) and will work closely with other members of the executive leadership team, the CBCO’s other direct reports as well as with the regional general managers, accelerator managing directors and program staff to identify strategic storytelling opportunities, events’ and other ways to tell the Techstars story. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a media relations program for the organization that aligns with its strategic goals and enhances its reputation by leading media relations and the creation of thought leadership opportunities for Techstars
  • Take a highly proactive approach to leveraging an existing set of relationships with media, conference organizers, podcast and broadcast producers to secure opportunities for Techstars
  • Effectively manage the media relations programme and the press office function - proactively identifying opportunities to generate positive news, managing rapid response to incoming enquiries and relevant external announcements to ensure continued timely and positive coverage in target outlets.
  • Partner with the CBCO in formulating Techstars financial / business success messaging and communications platform and strategy.
  • Writing of press releases, statements, messaging, Q&As and executive briefing documents
  • Research and identify timely trends and story lines, seizing media moments to generate opportunities for Techstars
  • Uncover ways to use internal data and information to feed into content which can be cross-utilized in social media, Email marketing materials, corporate events 
  • Conduct research to obtain interesting facts and statistics about Techstars and our portfolio companies that can be used in communications tools, channels and other media  
  • Implement data-driven processes and systems for tracking communications campaigns, initiatives and everyday media impact.  
  • Build partnerships with internal stakeholders at every level of the business and across multiple departments and geographies 
  • Maintain high performance under pressure and understand processes to ensure quick and timely execution of deliverables
  • Manage the Regional Communications Manager and collaborate with the Senior Manager of Internal communications
  • Supporting on issues management and working with senior colleagues (legal and human capital) to provide advice and develop required written materials

Qualifications and Skills:

  • 8-10+ years of experience in an in-house corporate communications, investor relations or PR agency role
  • Candidates must have experience in financial communications ideally with experience working in alternative investments, venture capital, private equity and early-stage startups (corporate communication experience is a nice to have but not essential)
  • Extensive business and finance media network
  • Demonstrable knowledge and deep understanding of how capital markets work, awareness of sector trends and leading opinion formers and a well-established media network. Must be able to convert this knowledge into strategies and opportunities for Techstars.
  • Experience successfully working with media and managing social media presence and engagement; ideally including key international market media contacts
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, research and planning skills
  • Time management and the ability to prioritize a varied workload and plan ahead
  • Ability to work effectively, calmly and deliberately within a busy team
  • Business acumen and fluency in Financial Communications' fundamental, with a solid understanding of financial performance measures
  • Ability to translate complicated business topics into engaging storytelling content 
  • Knowledge of marketing and PR tracking/measurement tools, social media tools, and basic Google suite
  • Strong interest in the discourse around technology, startups, entrepreneurship and venture capital
  • Driven and self-motivated, comfortable with working collaboratively and independently to drive initiatives and execute
  • An executive presence and has a comfort level working with C-suite leaders
  • Ability to identify news angles and be across the evolving news agenda.
  • Personable, confident, diplomatic and quick to learn.

Compensation range: $165,000 - $175,000 + 10% Bonus
