About The51

The51 is a venture capital firm and financial platform that unlocks the economic power of women by moving capital into ventures shaping industries and economies of the future. Through investments, expertise, and an influential network, The51 accelerates businesses and expands ownership in industries shaping tomorrow’s economy.

Position Overview

We are hiring for either a Senior Associate or Principal, depending on the experience and strengths of the candidate. This is a critical role on our investment team, with flexibility to shape scope, ownership, and leadership responsibilities based on your background. You’ll work across the full investment lifecycle—including deal sourcing, diligence, portfolio strategy, company-level M&A and exit preparedness, and internal operations—while helping to evolve and scale our data-driven VC model.

This role will work directly with the Managing Partner to expand The51’s fund operations and investment capacity. You’ll take ownership of core investment processes, portfolio data systems, and fund-level workflows that support firm-wide decision-making and LP reporting. The ideal candidate brings a unique blend of investment judgment, financial acumen, and operational leadership, with the confidence and maturity to act as a strategic extension of the Managing Partner.

This is a unique opportunity to grow within a mission-driven, performance-focused firm that is scaling both capital and infrastructure. You’ll be joining The51 at a time of expansion, clear opportunities for increased responsibility and career advancement.

Key Responsibilities

1. Investment Sourcing & Strategy

  • Identify and engage high-potential, women-led startups aligned with The51’s investment focus.

  • Conduct thematic research and develop investment theses around emerging markets and sectors.

  • Use structured data analysis and generative AI tools to enhance sourcing and trend identification.

2. Due Diligence & Deal Execution

  • Lead end-to-end due diligence including market sizing, competitor benchmarking, customer traction validation, and founder assessments.

  • Analyze business models and financial statements; develop valuation models and investment scenarios.

  • Use AI and digital tools selectively to accelerate research and information synthesis.

  • Prepare and present detailed investment memos for internal decision-making.

3. Financial Analysis

  • Support development and review of financial models, including revenue projections, burn rate, and runway analysis.

  • Assist in analyzing portfolio company financial statements and performance data.

  • Conduct benchmarking across portfolio companies and market comps to evaluate financial efficiency, growth potential, and fundraising readiness.

  • Translate financial data into actionable insights through internal reporting tools, dashboards, and analysis for team and LP communication.

4. Portfolio Monitoring & Management

  • Oversee fund-wide and individual portfolio company tracking, with an emphasis on KPIs, financial performance, and DEI/ESG outcomes.

  • Maintain and enhance portfolio scorecards and dashboards for internal review and LP reporting.

  • Monitor fundraising status, follow-on financing opportunities, and strategic milestones across the portfolio

  • Collaborate with GPs on value-creation strategies for portfolio companies, including paths to future M&A, strategic partnerships, and exit preparedness

4. Ecosystem Engagement & Thought Leadership

  • Represent The51 within the early-stage investing community and at ecosystem events.

  • Build strategic relationships with co-investors, accelerators, and industry experts.

  • Support continuous improvement of internal systems by evaluating and implementing analytical and digital tools, including AI where appropriate.

Qualifications

We’re open to candidates at the Senior Associate or Principal level, depending on experience and demonstrated leadership capacity.

  • For Senior Associate: 4-6+ years in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, consulting, or startup operating roles

  • For Principal: 6+ years in venture capital or related fields, with deal leadership and founder-facing experience

  • Strong financial acumen, including modeling, valuation, scenario planning, and interpreting startup financials.

  • Proven ability to lead investment processes, from sourcing through to deal execution and portfolio management.

  • Experience tracking KPI performance, DEI/ESG metrics, and company-level data for reporting and insights.

  • Understanding of how to leverage generative AI tools, with a thoughtful, responsible approach to their application.

  • Experience using portfolio management tools such as Tactyc (now Carta Fund Forecasting) or equivalents; familiarity with data visualization and investor reporting tools is an asset.

  • Demonstrated interest in supporting underrepresented founders.

  • Clear communicator with strong writing, analytical, and presentation skills; able to adapt tone and content to LPs, founders, and internal stakeholders.

  • Self-starter who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and brings strong judgment to independent decision-making.

  • Comfort with digital tools including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and modern research/AI platforms (e.g., ChatGPT, Notion AI, PitchBook)

What We Offer

  • Flexibility to grow the role based on your strengths and experience
