Sorenson Impact Foundation
A Salt Lake City private foundation making impact investments in early-stage companies and funds via PRIs, MRIs, and grants across education, healthcare, clean energy, and essential services.
Sorenson Impact Foundation is a private foundation established in 2012 by Jim and Krista Sorenson and based in Salt Lake City, Utah. It deploys its endowment across three instruments: program-related investments (PRIs), which use below-market or concessionary capital to advance mission objectives; mission-related investments (MRIs), which are market-rate investments aligned with the foundation's social and environmental goals; and grant partnerships with social entrepreneurs, businesses, and initiatives. The stated scale metric is that 100% of the foundation's assets have been moved into impact investments.
Investment activity is concentrated on early-stage companies and funds. Sector focus spans education, healthcare, clean energy, essential services, and social entrepreneurship. The mandate is dual in nature: capital is deployed against both meaningful social and environmental impact and financial sustainability, with the instrument mix - concessional or market-rate - determined by mission fit rather than return target alone. Catalytic capital sits alongside market-rate deployment within a single portfolio.
Alongside its investment programme, the foundation supports the development of the impact investing field and of the next generation of impact investing leaders. Its stated approach is to put capital to work broadly rather than spend only a small share of assets, spanning philanthropic, catalytic, and market-rate strategies within one organisation.
