SB

Strategic Business Innovator

Impact Investing is more important than ever before. We aim to back the most innovative ideas combining impact and ground-breaking technologies. By leveraging knowledge and ensuring access to a growing network of like-minded people and organizations, we provide the best support we can to founders, especially in the early stages of their companies. We are an international team combining investment expertise and operational excellence. As a team, we have the strong belief that it needs an outstanding impact ecosystem consisting of founders, investors, governments, and other organizations to be able to sustainably meet the greatest challenges of our time. Our Investment Focus We know that beginnings can be hard. Especially when you are on a mission to change the world for the better. We invest in superior technologies provided by passionate teams that contribute to saving our planet while building scalable business models. About Us Established in 1999 in Japan, the SBI Group has formed the world’s first and leading internet-based financial conglomerate providing financial services in a broad range of fields. The SBI Group’s business fields include securities, banking and insurance (Financial Service Business), investing in and incubating start-ups through various venture capital vehicles (Asset Management Business), and undertaking the R&D and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and health foods (Biotechnology Healthcare & Medical Informatics Business). By placing these business segments as the core of its operations, the SBI Group is taking on the challenge of realizing sustainable growth as a Strategic Business Innovator. Being one of the largest Japanese private equity firms with more than USD 4.8 billion AUM and more than 9,000 employees worldwide, the SBI Group has invested in more than 1,500 companies globally and is one of the world's largest investors in the FinTech sector. This broad platform is leveraged to further drive the value of SBI’s investments. In order to support the evolvement "from Japan’s SBI to the World’s SBI," the group established its first Western European representative office in Berlin in March 2019. In recent years, it has increased its investments in European start-ups, especially in start-ups based in Berlin.

RR

Red River West

RRW invests in outstanding European Tech companies. We promote their international take-off by providing significant financial firepower and game changing hands-on support in Europe & the US. Backing EU talents in the US Red River West was created to bring active support to outstanding European Tech Companies that have something unique to bring to the US market and transform them into US and Global successes. Within the team, we all share a track record of building and backing start-ups which became global leaders through EU to US expansion. We see our mission of backing European talents into US and Global successes as of strong impact. Europe is indeed home to a talented, driven pool of highly educated engineers and creative entrepreneurs. But the unfamiliarity with the US market means that too many promising European start-ups do not realize their full potential. US success doesn’t just mean bigger scale and more capital: translating Europe-based talent into US success requires expertise, commitment, and a deep understanding of the different business cultures. Narrow, hands-on portfolio strategy In the way we operate as investors and partners, we fully align with the success of the entrepreneurs we back. We have indeed a narrow portfolio strategy : we invest in only circa 10 companies per fund. It makes it possible for our team to dedicate plenty of time to the success of each entrepreneurs and truly provide game-changing hands-on support on both continents. This approach is really unique in VC and those differentiated foundations have been driving and fuelling our operating and ESG approach since day 1. Real-world impact We see our mission of backing European talents into US and Global successes as of strong impact by design. Europe is indeed home to talented and driven pool of top engineers and creative entrepreneurs, but they too often miss the familiarity needed with the US to scale globally. Additionally, we believe the Tech segments & models we invest in present huge opportunities to serve ESG global concerns, therefore investing in founders that care about their impact is one of our 5 core investment criteria. We have integrated environmental, social and governance best practices in numerous aspects of our own organization, including our proprietary sourcing platform. Bringing support on three ESG pillars Our latest fund RRW II Growth is classified under Article 8 of SFDR regulation, as a financial product that promotes, among other things, environmental or social characteristics. We decided to focus our efforts on three ESG subjects: Ethical Technology People Well-being Carbon Reduction We are convinced that those challenges fully align with our performance as a leading EU to US Tech investor; and this is our differentiated narrow portfolio strategy and operating DNA that allows us to act as dedicated and impactful partners on those three ESG pillars.

Elm Street Ventures

Since 2006 we’ve backed Yale faculty doing cutting edge research on some of the world’s largest problems. With Yale as our largest investor, we’ve supported teams developing much-needed therapeutics, advanced tools and materials for industry, and critical interventions for a warming planet. Our thesis is that great people and great science lead to great impact. YALE AND NEW HAVEN We are primarily interested in companies with a Yale connection, typically technology developed at and licensed from Yale. We also invest in companies located in the greater New Haven area, and, in exceptional cases, non-Yale/non-New Haven companies in which we have strong, personal connections to the founders or investors or where we can add substantial value. INVESTING IN PEOPLE In making investment decisions, we weigh the strength of the team as much as the technology or markets being addressed – often more. We look for creative thinking, high intelligence, passion, and a deep commitment to working hard for success. Building great businesses takes time and hard work. THERE AT THE START We are interested in investing as early as a good idea comes together, or later, as the team is formed and the business develops. We have been co-founders of a number of our portfolio companies, and find that the most rewarding (and hardest) thing we do. We typically make first investments of $500,000 to $1 million, and, if a company is tracking well, look to invest an additional $2 to $2.5 million over multiple financing rounds. We are happy to syndicate with other investors who share our views and approach to investing.
