FMO

Dutch development bank making direct early-stage technology investments in emerging markets through its Ventures Program, alongside loans, syndicated lending, equity and guarantees across more than 85 countries.

FMO is the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank. Its Ventures Program makes direct early-stage investments in technology companies serving emerging markets, part of a wider mandate to invest in commercially viable businesses and projects in emerging and challenging markets. The institution combines financial return with development impact, targeting markets where capital can support job and income generation.

Investment activity spans several instruments: long-term loans to commercially viable businesses and projects; syndicated lending arranged with co-investors and partners; direct equity investments to support growth; guarantee structures within financing solutions; and capacity development to help clients strengthen organisational knowledge and skills. The bank reports investments in more than 85 countries, with headquarters in the Netherlands.

Sector coverage is concentrated in energy, financial institutions, and agribusiness, food and forestry. Alongside capital, FMO works with clients to improve environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices and describes its approach as demonstrating that financial returns and positive development impact can be pursued together. It also collaborates with partners to crowd additional investors into sustainable growth financing.
