Finnfund

Finnfund is Finland's development finance institution and impact investor, providing long-term equity, mezzanine and loan financing to private-sector businesses in developing countries.

Finnfund is Finland's development finance institution and impact investor. It provides long-term financing to private-sector businesses and projects in developing countries, with the stated objective of supporting sustainable development. The organisation is based in Helsinki and directs its investment activity towards developing markets, including direct growth investments in digital and other businesses.

Its financing takes three forms: equity, mezzanine and loans. Equity financing provides long-term capital for new projects and business expansions in developing countries; mezzanine financing comprises long-term subordinated instruments; and loans cover commercial projects contributing to sustainable development. Sector coverage spans forestry, agriculture, energy, financial institutions, and digital infrastructure and solutions.

Investment is restricted to responsible, profitable private-sector businesses and projects; Finnfund does not finance public-sector organisations or NGOs. Impact priorities are set out explicitly as jobs and growth, climate and nature, and gender equality and human rights. These are supported by in-house capabilities in development finance, impact investing, development impact assessment, corporate responsibility and legal affairs - a multidisciplinary structure that combines financial and development expertise within the same organisation.
