Flagship Pioneering

Life sciences venture creation firm founded in 2000 that conceives, creates and grows first-in-category companies in therapeutics, agriculture and sustainability, including Moderna.

Flagship Pioneering is a life sciences venture creation and capital investment firm founded in 2000 by Noubar Afeyan. Rather than backing existing companies in a conventional venture model, Flagship conceives, creates, resources and grows first-in-category companies at the intersection of life science innovation, company creation and capital investment. Its stated mission is to transform human health and sustainability.

The firm operates across therapeutics, agricultural biotechnology, sustainability science and life sciences more broadly, with technical domains spanning mRNA technology, microbiome science, computational biology and AI-driven biomedicine, and gene writing and genome engineering. Portfolio companies include Moderna, which developed one of the first widely deployed mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, as well as Generate:Biomedicines, Tessera Therapeutics, Indigo Agriculture and Seres Therapeutics.

Scale is substantial: more than 120 scientific ventures originated, over $90 billion in aggregate value created, 40+ portfolio companies and more than 9,000 ecosystem employees across those companies. Patents granted worldwide exceed 2,500.

Flagship describes its innovation approach as beginning with seemingly unreasonable "what-if" questions and then navigating to transformational outcomes through rigorous science, with a focus on breakthrough, first-in-category companies.
