Angel City Advisors

About

Angel City Advisors facilitates the flow of capital and expertise to expand opportunity, elevate community-generated ideas, and achieve equity. We place a premium on market-oriented solutions to social challenges, and take pride in executing our vision at the highest levels with integrity and humility.

We provide a broad portfolio of services that help family offices, fund managers, foundations, municipalities and other market participants connect to social enterprises and emerging community voices. We identify, cultivate, and organize pipelines of enterprises, places, initiatives, and projects that merit strategic and programmatic partnership. We develop strategies and ecosystems, but also manage intermediaries, and lead individual pilots and ventures.

Our experience is deepest in the following areas:

  • STRATEGIC FUND ADVISING & DEVELOPMENT: We conceive, structure, capitalize, and manage strategic investment funds that make the world a better place. We also develop pipeline for existing funds and conduct due diligence on specific strategic investment opportunities.
  • ENTERPRISE CONSULTING & MENTORSHIP: We prepare startup companies and social enterprises for launch, growth, and capital attraction. We are subject matter experts in certain sectors (such as food) and segments (like low-income and multicultural populations). Our advising spans financial, operational, market access, community engagement, racial equity, and other strategic issues.
  • REAL ESTATE ADVISING & PROJECT MANAGEMENT: We assert that the physical transformation of communities can translate to improved health, happiness, and opportunity. We provide real estate strategy, entitlements, stakeholder engagement, financial structuring, and project management for inspiring community developers.
  • COMMUNITY CAPACITY BUILDING & ECOSYSTEM DEVELOPMENT: We help communities evolve and prepare themselves for greater levels of investment and innovation. We design and execute place-based initiatives, and develop more robust ecosystems, in order to attract and channel market forces for economic development.
  • RESEARCH, STRATEGY & THOUGHT LEADERSHIP: While we see ourselves as “doers” we understand that strategy fuels effective action and reflection drives innovation. We have been tapped to advise and publish across a number of subjects, including community banking, community development, diversity/equity/inclusion, food enterprise, food finance, placemaking, strategic investing, proximate leadership and mentoring, social enterprise, and more.

We understand that true growth and innovation often come from areas that have been neglected or underfunded, and it is our mission to bridge this gap by providing essential capital where it is most needed. Our organization was founded on the belief that every community, no matter how small or underserved, has the inherent potential to thrive when given the right resources and support. At McKenzie Shanahan, we view our role not merely as financiers but as partners in progress. We work closely with local businesses, governments, and stakeholders to identify opportunities for development that can transform entire regions. By targeting these overlooked areas, we not only aim to stimulate economic growth but also to inspire a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship that can sustain long-term prosperity. We are committed to crafting tailored solutions that address these challenges, ensuring that our investments lead to sustainable development and real, lasting impact. At McKenzie Shanahan, we believe that the success of our investments is measured not just by financial returns, but by the positive changes we help to bring about in the communities we serve. We are proud to be a driving force for change, helping to turn potential into progress, and vision into reality. Our commitment to these underserved areas is unwavering, and we are determined to continue making a significant difference, one community at a time. Gates Family Foundation

Gates Family Foundation (GFF) celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2021. Since its creation, the Foundation has distributed more than $550 million in grants, with another more than $65 million committed to impact investments in recent years. The Foundation endowment of approximately $575 million consists of both main Foundation assets and eight different family funds where family members house their philanthropic assets with the Foundation. Governance of the Foundation is a partnership of family and community representatives. The Foundation maintains a strong commitment to communities across Colorado through its responsive capital grant making as well as its initiated grantmaking in four key areas: Education: Expanding access to educational opportunities for all children in Colorado. Natural Resources: Supporting land conservation, water resource management, forest and watershed health, and stewardship of the state’s natural inheritance. Community Development: Addressing the root causes of economic inequality and inequitable community development, with particular emphasis on economic mobility and affordable housing. Informed Communities: Ensuring all Coloradans have access to trustworthy, rigorous, fact-based local news and information about important civic issues. In recent years, the Foundation has sought to increase its impact through more creative approaches to grantmaking, an expanded impact investing program, increases in staffing and expertise, and an increased focus on convening, partnering, and where appropriate, leading in the community. Climate has become a lens through which all Foundation grantmaking, investments, and activity are viewed, and since 2018, the Foundation has made an intentional commitment to advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts internally and through its grantmaking, impact investing, and operations.
