Frequently asked questions

  • Am I eligible to apply for the 100x Impact Accelerator? If you’re an impact-first organisation, a registered charity, not-for-profit, or social enterprise, and you’re currently scaling social impact in one of our eight Impact Areas, then you are eligible. We welcome applicants from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a minimum viable product (MVP) and a track record of achieving impact.
  • How do you define a social enterprise? We define a social enterprise as an impact-first organisation that engages in commercial or business activities such as selling products or services to serve a social mission. Social enterprises may be structured as a non-profit or a for-profit.
  • I am not sure if my for-profit venture is a social enterprise. Should I apply? If you are running a for-profit where financial gain, and not impact, is your primary goal, we can recommend other accelerators looking to accelerate more traditional for-profit models that can better support your growth journey. If your venture is an impact-first organisation with a primary social mission, then please apply!
  • What type of ventures are you looking for? We’re looking for innovative impact scale-ups. Applicants should have a proven track record and be ready for their next big leap of growth. In an application, we want to hear from outstanding social entrepreneurs who are bold, collaborative, self-aware and kind. You should be able to demonstrate that your organisation offers a game-changing solution that’s already driving positive change. And you must be able to prove that amplifying your impact can result in change on a significant scale.
  • What types of organisations will you NOT fund? We know you’re busy building your organisation and want to make sure applicants feel aligned with what 100x is offering. We don’t want to waste anyone’s time, so here are a list of things 100x does NOT fund:
  • Ideas, blueprints, or pre-pilot stage organisations
  • For-profit companies WITHOUT a clear impact focus or social mission
  • Organisations with annual operating budgets greater than $10 million
  • Organisations that have been in operation for over 6 years (although this is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule)
  • Initiatives or programmes housed within a mature, established organisation – unless the programme will be spun out, and there are plans to do so
  • Organisations that consult on behalf of clients (unless this is part of a unique model and different to traditional consulting firms)
  • What kind of funding do you provide? Our funding is flexible, impact-first, unrestricted, and based on trust. We offer catalytic grants and repayable grants to charities and social enterprises. Upon completion of the 100x accelerator programme, if your charity or social enterprise has achieved extraordinary and outsized impact, you may be eligible for our follow-on funding.
  • How much does the 100x Impact Accelerator cost? Our programme is free. We also cover your costs to join us in person (at our London HQ) for the first and last week of the accelerator, and to attend our Summit Day at the end of the year.

Zinc

Zinc exists to build and scale a brand-new way to solve the world's most important societal problems. Our approach empowers the most talented and motivated people in the world to redirect their careers and have a large-scale social impact as entrepreneurs, researchers and intrapreneurs. Mission-Led Approach We focus on specific ‘missions’, which we believe unite, mobilise and organise the best talent, knowledge and capital that are needed to break through at scale. Within each of our missions, we run Venture Builder and Academy programmes that help individuals to have impact. We have 3 criteria for choosing a Zinc mission: It must tackle one of the great unmet needs in the developed world. The target addressable market must exceed 100m people in the developed world alone. There must be lots of unexploited opportunities to disrupt, extend and improve existing services through new technologies; insights from research. Since we launched in 2017, we have been developing a unique ecosystem of diverse talent across many sectors, disciplines and countries – mobilising people around a common mission and building scalable solutions to social problems. Each of our programmes provide unique opportunities for R&D. We are committed to building a new commercial innovation system for the social sciences, to increase the impact of existing research and to generate new R&D opportunities through our ventures. Zinc’s main financial backer is the London School of Economics. Zinc is also a member of the ASPECT consortium which is focused on accelerating the impact of social science.
