Christian Macaluso

Bioengineering researcher and clinical innovator specializing in medical devices and translational healthcare

Riverside, United StatesActively looking

I am a bioengineering student at the University of California, Riverside, pursuing a BS in Bioengineering and an MS in Bioengineering. My work combines biomedical research, mechanical design, clinical experience, and translational innovation, with research focused on ultrasound detection of thrombosis, pediatric assistive technologies, and automated OCT imaging systems. I have designed and fabricated PDMS aneurysm phantoms, infant upper-extremity models, drug-delivery capsules, and electromechanical imaging systems using CAD, 3D printing, silicone molding, LabVIEW, and stepper motor actuation. My research has been presented at undergraduate, UC LEADS, BMES, UCLA SPUR, and senior design conferences, and I have contributed to published work on infant physical models and sonographic thrombosis analysis. Alongside engineering, I have extensive clinical experience in emergency, critical care, pediatric, cardiac, and surgical environments. As a medical scribe and Scribe Ambassador, I document emergency department care, train new scribes, review chart quality, and support clinical education. I am motivated by opportunities at the intersection of biomedical engineering, medical devices, clinical practice, and pediatric healthcare innovation.

Scribe Ambassador

Loma Linda University Health — ScribeAmerica

Aug 2026 – Present

Loma Linda, CAPart time

I train new scribes in clinical documentation during floor-shadowing shifts, demonstrating accurate charting of histories and physicals, examinations, procedures, and medical decision-making. I conduct probationary chart reviews, monitor trainee progress and chart quality, and report findings to the Chief Scribe and Quality Assurance Associate. I also serve as a shift resource, identify training gaps, develop tailored training programs, and complete performance reports and rubrics.

Entrepreneurship Fellow

INNOVAR Entrepreneurship Program, UC Riverside

Jun 2026 – Aug 2026

Riverside, CA

I developed a pediatric surgical medtech startup through a seven-week accelerator focused on transforming technology concepts into commercially viable solutions. I conducted customer discovery with pediatric neurosurgeons, congenital heart surgeons, and Johns Hopkins faculty, evaluated instrumentation and workflow gaps, and refined the venture from hydrocephalus treatment toward pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. I developed early-stage device concepts and commercial strategy at the intersection of pediatric surgery, biomedical engineering, and translational medicine.

Senior Design Project — Automated Multi-Axis OCT Imaging Stage

UC Riverside Department of Bioengineering

Sep 2025 – Jun 2026

Riverside, CAPart time

I am designing an automated Optical Coherence Tomography imaging stage with XYZ translation and dual-axis tilt. I developed CAD models for mechanical assemblies, motor mounts, sample-positioning components, and system layout, while integrating stepper motor actuation, LabVIEW programming, and performance validation. I also contribute to torque analysis, component selection, prototype fabrication, and system-level testing.

Honors Capstone Thesis — Ultrasound Detection of Thrombosis in Aneurysm Phantoms

UC Riverside University Honors Program

Jan 2025 – Jan 2026

Riverside, CAPart time

I investigated ultrasound-based approaches for detecting clot formation within PDMS aneurysm phantom models. I developed experimental methods for phantom fabrication, flow testing, and sonographic analysis, while exploring translational applications for monitoring flow-diverted aneurysms and thrombus development.

Undergraduate Researcher

Biomedical Microdevices Lab, UC Riverside

Oct 2024 – Jun 2026

Riverside, CAPart time

I investigate thrombosis formation in flow-diverted aneurysm models using ultrasound imaging. I fabricate PDMS aneurysm phantoms, evaluate clot formation under controlled flow conditions, and conduct literature reviews on ultrasound-based clot detection, vascular phantom fabrication, and flow-diverter stent models. I am developing an Honors Capstone focused on non-invasive sonographic detection of thrombus formation.
