Job Description Summary

As a senior member of the Nationwide Ventures team, you will help grow our portfolio of early-to-late stage companies shaping the future of insurance and financial services. Nationwide Ventures makes direct investments in startup companies and facilitates partnerships between startups and Nationwide’s business units to help protect and improve the financial security of Nationwide’s customers. In this role, you will be responsible for sourcing, evaluating and investing in early-to-late stage companies that have the potential for venture-quality returns and are of strategic importance to Nationwide. The work includes financial and strategic analysis of prospective investments and portfolio companies, sourcing new opportunities, and providing guidance to portfolio companies as needed. You will also provide insights to Nationwide’s business unit partners into emerging technologies, markets, and new business models that are of strategic importance to Nationwide's future business models and operations.

Key Responsibilities

Job Description

  • Leads development and management of multiple thematic investment areas / sectors and sources investment prospects in those areas through personal ecosystem relationships.
  • Leads investment of up to 3-5 transactions per year through leading a team that performs business, financial, and industry due diligence on transactions and negotiates applicable deal structure and terms for investment execution.
  • Leads portfolio companies to meet identified critical metrics by serving as a board member or board observer for up to 5 companies, as well as leads Nationwide executive sponsors and business relationships with respective portfolio companies.
  • Brings new insights and thought leadership to Nationwide. Considered a leader with vision on industry movement and activities, and remains on top of key trends within insurance, financial services, startups and technology companies.
  • Anticipates where relevant companies, trends, and technologies might be going and informs senior leadership, business partners, and corporate strategies on such trends.

May Perform Other Responsibilities As Assigned.

Typical Skills And Experiences

Education: Bachelors in related field (business, finance, engineering, science, math) or related experience, MBA or Master’s Degree, in related field.

Experience: 8-10 years of direct work experience in venture capital, private equity, or a startup operator that has raised venture capital; direct experience leading early stage company due diligence and producing strategic, highly analytical, and compelling deal screens and investment underwriting memorandums; experience managing a portfolio of venture investments and actively serving as a board member or board observer; brings established venture capital ecosystem relationships to the role., Startup/operator, venture capital, and/or technical experience specifically in the financial services (FinTech) or insurance (InsurTech) industry sectors a plus

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Outstanding financial, analytical, and quantitative skills and proficiency in spreadsheet modeling, including cash-flow analysis and investment valuation techniques. Superior strategic-thinking skills, combined with impeccable business judgment and the ability to challenge and question perceived norms. Experience building and maintaining relationships with senior executives, venture/PE firm partners, and market/industry professionals. Experience building and leading high performance teams. Experience investing in early stage companies, growth equity, or impact investing. Detail-oriented and able to run contending priorities across a variety of tasks and timelines. Highly professional at all times with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills. Ability to make well reasoned conclusions and recommendations regarding new investment opportunities, and relative to specific transaction execution and portfolio management situations. Ability to work both independently and lead a team under tight timeframes in a fast paced and constantly evolving environment. Passion for identifying promising high-margin, high-growth businesses. Excellent personal rapport and ability to engender trust and respect across Nationwide. Excellent interpersonal skills, and strong business and creative writing skills.

Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not Eligible)

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Occasional travel. Non-standard or extended work may be required based on project needs.
