Fifty Years

About

We’re founders, we back founders, and we’re backed by world-class founders.

Fifty Years is an early stage VC firm based in San Francisco. We’re backed by 44 founders of tech companies valued between $1B and $100B who want to help the next generation of founders change the world for the better. We call them the League of Giants because 50Y founders can stand atop their shoulders.

We back world-class scientists.

Fifty Years helps founders translate breakthrough science to solve humanity’s greatest problems. Helping world-class scientists become world-class entrepreneurs is our jam. So far, we’ve backed 44 PhD founders and 22 PhD CEOs.

What’s your focus?

We partner with amazing entrepreneurs solving the world's biggest problems with technology. We focus on pre-seed and seed. We’re sector agnostic but we like deep tech. We strongly prefer companies with their initial go-to-market in North America or Europe. Our sweet spot is at the center of this Venn diagram:

What specific areas are you interested in?

We're currently very enthusiastic about deep tech: climate tech, synthetic biology, accelerating scientific discovery, and food tech, but we are a generalist firm. Hardware, software, healthcare, robotics – as long as there's a chance to build a massive business while solving a big problem in the world, we’re excited!

What’s the “Mr Burns test”?

We initially came up with the “Mr Burns test” while thinking about companies in the sustainability vertical. In the majority of cases, it’s difficult to assess whether a product or an idea the founders have in mind – no matter how clever, innovative or practical it might be – will actually be appealing to the public. So the sustainability company’s goal is to build a product that Mr Burns, aka the prototypic self-absorbed egoistic greedy capitalist from “The Simpsons”, would buy not because it’s sustainable but because it’s the best / cheapest / most convenient for HIM. It may be a sad reality of human nature but we deeply believe that passing the “Mr Burns Test” is key to achieving impact at scale.

Why "Fifty Years"?

In 1931 Winston Churchill wrote a phenomenal essay called "Fifty Years Hence", in which he predicts nuclear power, cell phones, genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, and even cultured meat! He also talks about the social responsibility of scientists and technologists to build the world we actually want. While we do not endorse the entire complicated legacy of Churchill, we were inspired by the predictive insight of this essay and the message that technologists have both great power and therefore great responsibility.

Why did you start Fifty Years?

As entrepreneurs ourselves, we found it nearly impossible to find savvy investors that had the knowledge, networks, and experience to help us scale our business, and who also fully supported our mission. We decided to solve our own problem, emptied our bank accounts in 2016, and we never looked back since!

What's wrong with "business as usual"?

For a while now the sole purpose of business has been to "maximize shareholder value." It's time to move past this idea. This thinking caused otherwise good people to start or work for companies that have negative societal or environmental impact (polluting or poisoning people). It also prevented a lot of entrepreneurs from fulfilling the true potential of business.

You can hear Seth talk about this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muiIah22Cko

What are you looking for in founders you partner with?

We look for entrepreneurs who want to build massive businesses and move the world forward in a real – and positive! – way. We don't back founders just looking to get rich. We are looking for founders that aim to make a positive impact by building a massive business.

Successful companies take many years to build, so we look for entrepreneurs we could see ourselves working with for 5+ years. We like founders who are determined, passionate, smart, creative, and – maybe most importantly – can get right back up after getting knocked down. We look for charismatic leaders – those that can recruit and inspire thousands of incredibly talented employees, and evangelize the company to customers, press, and investors.

How do I get in touch with you?

Join one of our events or come to one of our Friday’s happy hours. You can also say "hi" at a conference or get an intro from someone in our network (LinkedIn/Facebook/Twitter are your friends here). If, for whatever reason, none of the above is an option, just email us at hello AT fiftyyears.com.

This time we have an opportunity - and an obligation - to ensure technology is a force for good, that improves the lives of future generations without collateral damage. We’re optimistic this is possible, and we choose to focus on the possibilities of great teams setting out on meaningful missions, rather than obsessing about what might go wrong. The defining companies of our generation will be addressing fundamental issues in climate, energy, health, and equitable society. These are the companies we want to make possible. Geography: We recognise that Interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs bring together diverse perspectives and expertise, leading to breakthrough ideas and solutions. The brightest minds often gravitate to these intersections and each other, and that can happen anywhere. IndieBio

Our business is to turn scientists into entrepreneurs who can save lives and save the planet (we call this “human and planetary health”). Personal, 1 on 1, with IndieBio’s Team We are not an assembly line. You are not a widget. Every startup is unique and needs devoted attention. Most startup programs have a meeting with you once a week. We talk to you almost every day. We sit with you, desk to desk, as we work. These rapid touchpoints speed up your iteration cycles and are critical to your evolution into a successful startup. You get direct access to the team that helped build so many iconic companies over the years. Most accelerators are designed to spot the one company in 10 that might be big one day. At IndieBio, every startup matters. You are our first priority. Your success is our only business model. We only invest in companies that come through our accelerator. Our Alumni are Our Greatest Asset All new startups get the benefit of a trusted community with 199 alumni who are happy to share their wisdom. Going through IndieBio is an incredible bonding experience. We teach a philosophy and mindset that is uniquely ours. You’ll become emotionally and intellectually attached to your fellow batch mates. You’ll remember them the rest of your life. This deep connection informs the next years to come. IndieBio is our startups’ birthplace. Everyone visits home. Every generation of startups gets the benefit of alumni help, and then they repay the favor to the new batch. First, we can start funding you and working with you earlier, long before you’re ready to be in the intensive program. We’ve done this up to 9 months in advance. So even if you haven’t graduated yet, or haven’t yet gone full-time on the startup, we recommend you still apply. We Believe in Diversity 44% female. First, second, and third time founders. 36 nationalities. Post-docs and corporates. Ages 21 to 75. Diversity is a core thesis for IndieBio. We find talent that many others overlook. Some of the greatest companies of tomorrow are hiding in plain sight, today, right now. It’s just that nobody listens long and hard enough to recognize the brilliance and the potential. If other investors have told you that you’re “too early,” well, that’s our sweet spot. We’ve funded paper plans, where no science has been done yet–and created hugely successful companies that way. Perhaps the greatest endorsement is how many alumni have returned to IndieBio to create their second company. Choose SOSV as your Partner IndieBio’s parent is SOSV, which has $1 billion in assets under management, and is consistently a Top Quartile VC. SOSV runs programs around the world in robotics, biotech, mobile ecommerce, fintech, automated manufacturing, food, and cryptocurrencies. The firm was founded by Sean O’Sullivan, who had also been an entrepreneur and a humanitarian. In 2020, during the heat of the pandemic – when others were retreating – we were the most active investor in the US. We are now the 4th most active early stage investor in India. Our climate tech portfolio alone is worth over $6 billion. Partners for the Long-term The journey begins with $525,000 and our intense program. But we continue to invest meaningfully in every round. 80% of our capital is deployed post-accelerator. We recommend choosing your investors wisely. We offer the biggest checks in the accelerator industry, but that’s just the beginning. SOSV, our venture fund, is spread around the globe and manages $1.4 billion (as of September 16, 2022). We target a long-term ownership of around 10%, and we continue to invest at Seed through Series C. We are a long-term partner, not just a first-check accelerator. At IndieBio, we are in touch with thousands of investors, and we have co-invested with well over 400 firms. The SOSV network is even greater.
