Alpine Space Ventures

Alpine Space Ventures is the leading European investment fund manager in the NewSpace sector. We invest in the most promising technologies around space-borne connectivity and data and aim to play a key role in shaping the European NewSpace industry. NewSpace Connectivity & Data 15 Companies max. Series-A €1–5m initially Tech & industry expertise EDGE Alpine Space Ventures’ unique selling point is the wealth of technical and industry experience our team brings to the table. More than 80 years combined years spent at SpaceX and in the European NewSpace ecosystem have equipped us with a deep understanding of complex technical systems and the ability to identify key market opportunities and tackle the most challenging yet promising projects with our founders. Our Partner Bulent's role as a key architect behind the avionics that to date still fly and land the rockets and Capsules of SpaceX and as the Vice President ensuring the successful execution of the Starlink constellation demonstrate his strong command of technical complexity. Our Technical Director Catriona's 16 years at SpaceX, including her time leading Starship Avionics, highlight her deep technical understanding and expertise in space systems that are critical for the operation and control of any spacecraft. Last but not least, our Advisor Hans’ time as the Chief Engineer at SpaceX and his involvement in developing the technology of the world's most successful commercial space company, demonstrate his expertise and skills which are an invaluable asset to our fund. Our Partners look at a strong track record of investing into successful NewSpace companies. The best testament to our business acumen and thorough understanding of market dynamics is their early joint investment in Isar Aerospace, the emerging European leader in commercial orbital launch before they founded Alpine Space Ventures. Another precious asset we hold is our broad network in the space and aerospace industry and adjacent industries. We believe that this unique combination of technical expertise, industry experience and network set us apart and positions us to emerge as the leading NewSpace Venture fund. APPROACH We are avid learners with a strong track record in building and funding successful NewSpace companies. We look for patterns and unseen innovation at the same time. We team up with our founders. As an early-stage investor, we target companies at series-A stage and deploy tickets between €1-5m, with the potential for significantly larger tickets over the lifetime of the company. We deliberately chose to invest into a maximum of 15 companies in order to be able to go the extra mile with each founding team we support. FOCUS The space industry is undergoing a radical transformation. In the US, SpaceX has quickly outstripped traditional space companies and become the most valuable private space company in the world. In Europe, we are seeing a surge in the emergence of innovative private space companies that are working on technologies and approaches that have the potential to revolutionize not only the space industry, but also a wide range of other industries including agriculture, automotive, maritime, logistics, insurance, weather, telecommunications, navigation, and energy. These are the types of companies Alpine Space Ventures focuses on. Alpine Space Ventures focuses on the two NewSpace value chains with the strongest market demand and the shortest way to commercialization: Satellite connectivity and geospatial data. NewSpace technologies, particularly in the areas of connectivity and data, have not only become political priorities but also crucial tools to build a more sustainable future on Earth and in space. Connectivity & Data The number of satellites in space is expected to increase from 5,500 up to 100,000 by 2030. By 2040, space-based connectivity is forecasted to account for more than 50% of the global space economy’s growth, fueled by the increasing demand for bandwidth from consumers and businesses, the growth of the Industrial Internet of Things in various industries, the limited range of high-speed wireless networks like 5G, the fact that more than half of the world lacks access to broadband, and the decreasing cost of launching and building satellites. Satellite constellations offer a cost-effective solution for providing high-quality, ubiquitous service to everyone everywhere. The commercial Earth observation data and services market alone is expected to grow from €3.8 billion to €6.6 billion by 2029, driven by the emergence of cost-effective satellite constellations, the speed of data delivery, and overall high resilience. With more than half of global GDP being exposed to risks due to moderate to high dependence on nature and its effects, the transition towards a sustainable future call for advanced capacity, tools, and services to monitor, analyze, predict the state and evolution of soil, air, water, and weather, and to observe greenhouse gas emissions and their impacts. Sustainability On the one hand, satellite connectivity meets the growing demand for internet access particularly in developing countries where terrestrial infrastructure is still largely unavailable or unreliable. Satellite connectivity provides access to information and educational resources for individuals and communities that may not have had this access otherwise. The same applies as well to remote or rural areas, disaster zones, or during emergency situations. But also to the health sector, for instance, where satellite internet can act as a facilitator for telemedicine and other remote healthcare services, improving access to healthcare for individuals in underserved areas. Earth Observation data and satellite services, on the other hand, are driving significant transformations in a variety of fields. From more accurate weather forecasting and greenhouse gas and methane emissions for climate protection to water management. This includes real-time data i.e. on marine accidents such as oil spills, the broader protection, management, and maintenance of ecosystems and habitats. And for example precision farming, which allows for a more efficient and environment-friendly approach to agriculture by enabling precise and autonomous control of equipment and machinery in the field, optimizing the use of fertilizers and other agrochemicals. The data also allow for accurate weather modeling and microclimate measurements. TEAM After working in fields where space technology is used to make life on Earth safer, more sustainable and more efficient on our individual career paths, this shared vision has become the underlying foundation of our work at Alpine Space Ventures. With our diversified team, we are committed to finding and building tomorrow’s industry leaders.

SCOR Ventures

SCOR Ventures is the venture investment arm of SCOR Reinsurance, responsible for both investing in and creating partnerships with startups across the insurtech landscape. Since 2017 we have built a global portfolio across three theses: (1) investing in tech-driven underwriting companies (MGAs, carriers) and distributors, (2) software solutions that benefit SCOR and/or our clients, and (3) companies that help people live healthier lives. Our investment scope includes both investments and commercial (re)insurance relationships with startups. We predominantly invest at late Seed / Series A and are interested in a broad range of B2B and B2B2C solutions across MedTech, wellness, wearables, data platforms, and software / AI platforms. What we’re looking for We invest across three thesis areas: Thesis 1: we invest and partner in the ‘Insurers of the Future’: tech-driven underwriting companies (MGAs, carriers) that offer multiple points of digital and business model differentiation across P&C and L&H. We provide direct access to SCOR expertise and our global network to help portfolio companies scale and/or access (re)insurance capacity. With a proven track record of supporting innovative underwriting propositions across multiple lines of business, we understand product development, program structuring, underwriting, pricing and distribution and thus have the capabilities to optimise partnerships between insurtechs and business partners. We predominantly invest at late Seed / Series A. We are class of business agnostic and have partnered with companies across a broad variety of personal and specialty lines. Thesis 2: we invest and partner in software solutions that benefit SCOR and/or our clients. We provide a broad understanding of the interests and pain points of insurers across the world, and the potential to connect companies with insurers through SCOR’s client services initiatives. We predominantly invest later stage vs. Thesis 1 (typically Series A-B) but have occasional appetite for Seed. We prioritise companies: developing data, tools, and methods for obtaining, understanding, pricing and transferring large portfolios of pre-aggregated risks, high-value individual risks such as energy facilities and construction mega-projects, and MGA/coverholder business delivering economically valuable additional services offering a visible outcome which can be used to boost client management or reduce risks. Focus areas include front-end (e.g., underwriting & pricing) policy administration, modelling, risk analytics, and claims developing platforms where insurance has not previously been embedded / distributed, but where SCOR Ventures sees substantial opportunities to close the global protection gap – e.g., marketplaces, “super apps”, b2b fintech, employee benefits working to solve climate and ESG challenges to support the net zero transition and cut emissions for SCOR and SCOR clients. Focus areas include ESG reporting, climate risk analysis and data, carbon offsetting as a solution, circular economy, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) tech, and supply chain transparency. We also see several opportunities in the green insurance product space including solar production or maintenance guarantees, wind input parametric products, solar physical asset damage, cat-bond / ILS and insuring carbon credit projects. Thesis 3: We invest at the intersection of health and technology and partner with companies that help people live healthier lives, deliver in-force or claims outcome improvements, develop new business or add to SCOR’s Knowledge Center capabilities, and assist our clients to transform their offerings. We predominantly invest at late Seed / Series A and are interested in a broad range of B2B and B2B2C solutions across MedTech, wellness, wearables, data platforms, and software / AI platforms. How we operateIntegrated in the wider SCOR business: Direct access to the entirety of SCOR’s capabilities brings unique added value to our portfolio companies. SCOR’s core business has experts in nearly every country, line of business, and functional area, while SCOR Partners bring a broad range of client services, marketing and product development expertise. Mandate: focused on key markets in North America, EMEA and LATAM, with selective deployment in APAC and Africa. Stage and ownership: We invest Seed to Series B. We typically seek greater than 5% ownership at first investment, which may include a board seat (we have led or co-led half of our investments to date). Our investment is intended to make SCOR a meaningful contributor but leave founders room to manage their cap table. We look for a long-term investment and / or commercial relationship but do not seek a fast exit or to ultimately acquire portfolio companies. Partnership approach: we are active supporters of the companies we work with, assisting with technical input, recruitment, capital optimisation and more. The material growth of many insurtech MGAs and carriers has led to increasing demand for (re)insurance capacity; SCOR is a transparent, long-term partner. Insurtechs in SaaS and services segments, meanwhile, have benefited from SCOR’s long-standing client relationships, while SCOR benefits from bringing knowledge, links, and expertise regarding services with genuine value to our clients. We bring value to our portfolio companies by connecting them with other partner companies, as well as with founders and distribution leads in our network. Why partner with SCOR VenturesWe believe in fewer, deeper relationships over the long term. We are flexible and collaborative in our approach, tailoring a solution to your specific needs, in partnership with other insurers, reinsurers, and investors involved in your company as appropriate. We underwrite most major lines of business and geographies globally. We have a global network including insurance licenses but not a competing retail insurance arm. Insurers are our clients, so working with us does not limit your options to associate with insurers. In selected circumstances, we can offer access to Lloyd’s or SCOR’s insurance licenses in the U.S., Europe, Asia, Brazil, South Africa, and other markets. We look to move quickly with direct access to decision makers, whilst leveraging resources and expertise to ensure our partners can build relationships with the appropriate parts of our organization.

ACTAI Ventures

We invest in high growth, early-stage companies that leverage technologies and digitization to create societal benefit, efficiency, and scale aligned with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. We are a community of founders, operators, and investors with deep domain expertise, diverse networks, and a desire to help innovative companies grow. We look for massive markets that are well-timed and companies with high growth, reasonable valuations, and impact. We will focus on investments from ACTAI Global and Extreme Tech Challenge but not be limited to those communities. Digitization and data science are remaking many industries because they lower friction and usage cost and enable replicability and scalability. Digitization allows for the virtualization of physical assets and more efficient asset utilization. Some of these concepts are eloquently articulated by Bill Tai in a Medium post on “Currency in the 4th Industrial Revolution” from 2018. We also believe technology innovation is borderless, which means great companies can come from anywhere! One of the first companies coming out of the Extreme Tech Challenge was Canva in 2015, which was seeded from the ACTAI Global community. The need for unified and coordinated initiatives to support (primarily digital) innovation as a catalyst for growth within an overarching framework of sustainability has accelerated as economies shift from being based on oil to electrons. We are excited to partner with founders who are making a huge impact and provide them with the social and financial capital they need!
