EDGE
Alpine Space Ventures’ unique selling point is the wealth of technical and industry experience our team brings to the table. More than 80 years combined years spent at SpaceX and in the European NewSpace ecosystem have equipped us with a deep understanding of complex technical systems and the ability to identify key market opportunities and tackle the most challenging yet promising projects with our founders.
Our Partner Bulent's role as a key architect behind the avionics that to date still fly and land the rockets and Capsules of SpaceX and as the Vice President ensuring the successful execution of the Starlink constellation demonstrate his strong command of technical complexity. Our Technical Director Catriona's 16 years at SpaceX, including her time leading Starship Avionics, highlight her deep technical understanding and expertise in space systems that are critical for the operation and control of any spacecraft. Last but not least, our Advisor Hans’ time as the Chief Engineer at SpaceX and his involvement in developing the technology of the world's most successful commercial space company, demonstrate his expertise and skills which are an invaluable asset to our fund.
Our Partners look at a strong track record of investing into successful NewSpace companies. The best testament to our business acumen and thorough understanding of market dynamics is their early joint investment in Isar Aerospace, the emerging European leader in commercial orbital launch before they founded Alpine Space Ventures.
Another precious asset we hold is our broad network in the space and aerospace industry and adjacent industries. We believe that this unique combination of technical expertise, industry experience and network set us apart and positions us to emerge as the leading NewSpace Venture fund.
APPROACH
We are avid learners with a strong track record in building and funding successful NewSpace companies. We look for patterns and unseen innovation at the same time. We team up with our founders. As an early-stage investor, we target companies at series-A stage and deploy tickets between €1-5m, with the potential for significantly larger tickets over the lifetime of the company. We deliberately chose to invest into a maximum of 15 companies in order to be able to go the extra mile with each founding team we support.
FOCUS
The space industry is undergoing a radical transformation. In the US, SpaceX has quickly outstripped traditional space companies and become the most valuable private space company in the world. In Europe, we are seeing a surge in the emergence of innovative private space companies that are working on technologies and approaches that have the potential to revolutionize not only the space industry, but also a wide range of other industries including agriculture, automotive, maritime, logistics, insurance, weather, telecommunications, navigation, and energy. These are the types of companies Alpine Space Ventures focuses on.
Alpine Space Ventures focuses on the two NewSpace value chains with the strongest market demand and the shortest way to commercialization: Satellite connectivity and geospatial data.
NewSpace technologies, particularly in the areas of connectivity and data, have not only become political priorities but also crucial tools to build a more sustainable future on Earth and in space.
Connectivity & Data
The number of satellites in space is expected to increase from 5,500 up to 100,000 by 2030. By 2040, space-based connectivity is forecasted to account for more than 50% of the global space economy’s growth, fueled by the increasing demand for bandwidth from consumers and businesses, the growth of the Industrial Internet of Things in various industries, the limited range of high-speed wireless networks like 5G, the fact that more than half of the world lacks access to broadband, and the decreasing cost of launching and building satellites. Satellite constellations offer a cost-effective solution for providing high-quality, ubiquitous service to everyone everywhere.
The commercial Earth observation data and services market alone is expected to grow from €3.8 billion to €6.6 billion by 2029, driven by the emergence of cost-effective satellite constellations, the speed of data delivery, and overall high resilience. With more than half of global GDP being exposed to risks due to moderate to high dependence on nature and its effects, the transition towards a sustainable future call for advanced capacity, tools, and services to monitor, analyze, predict the state and evolution of soil, air, water, and weather, and to observe greenhouse gas emissions and their impacts.
Sustainability
On the one hand, satellite connectivity meets the growing demand for internet access particularly in developing countries where terrestrial infrastructure is still largely unavailable or unreliable. Satellite connectivity provides access to information and educational resources for individuals and communities that may not have had this access otherwise. The same applies as well to remote or rural areas, disaster zones, or during emergency situations. But also to the health sector, for instance, where satellite internet can act as a facilitator for telemedicine and other remote healthcare services, improving access to healthcare for individuals in underserved areas.
Earth Observation data and satellite services, on the other hand, are driving significant transformations in a variety of fields. From more accurate weather forecasting and greenhouse gas and methane emissions for climate protection to water management. This includes real-time data i.e. on marine accidents such as oil spills, the broader protection, management, and maintenance of ecosystems and habitats. And for example precision farming, which allows for a more efficient and environment-friendly approach to agriculture by enabling precise and autonomous control of equipment and machinery in the field, optimizing the use of fertilizers and other agrochemicals. The data also allow for accurate weather modeling and microclimate measurements.
TEAM
After working in fields where space technology is used to make life on Earth safer, more sustainable and more efficient on our individual career paths, this shared vision has become the underlying foundation of our work at Alpine Space Ventures. With our diversified team, we are committed to finding and building tomorrow’s industry leaders.
