x15ventures

A Commonwealth Bank-backed venture scaler founded in 2020 that builds, buys and invests in startups with access to CommBank's 15 million customers.

x15ventures is a wholly-owned venture subsidiary of Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank), established in 2020. Described as a venture scaler rather than a conventional fund, it builds, buys and invests in startups positioned to benefit from connections to CommBank's customer base of approximately 15 million. Funding is allocated from Commonwealth Bank's $1 billion annual technology investment envelope, and the vehicle operates exclusively in Australia.

The model combines three modes of engagement - build, buy and invest - under a single portfolio structure. Ventures run on a separate technology stack from the bank's core systems, allowing rapid build and iteration, while operating within enterprise-grade governance and risk processes. x15ventures states three operating pillars: pace, safety and scale. The unit evolved from the bank's innovation lab into a venture scaling model, and positions itself between corporate and startup environments, retaining autonomy over how ventures are developed while drawing on the bank's strategy, brand, insights and distribution.

Technical domains span venture building, startup investment and acquisition, fintech, and governance and risk technology. Portfolio companies gain access to CommBank's customer distribution at a scale independent startups would not typically reach; x15ventures frames this as helping ventures grow faster than standalone equivalents. Industry verticals of interest include banking, financial services, corporate venturing and technology startups.

For candidates, the distinguishing characteristics are the corporate funding base combined with startup-style operating autonomy, direct exposure to both venture building and regulated banking infrastructure, and the requirement to work within bank-standard risk and governance frameworks while pursuing speed of execution.
