THE ROLE

We are hiring an Associate for the early-stage team. The core of the job is research and diligence: building a deep understanding of the markets we invest in, and doing the work to decide whether a specific company is worth backing. You will work directly with the investing professionals who lead the early-stage effort and will own coverage of specific markets.

The role is based in our Menlo Park office, with 3-4 days a week in person.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop research on markets within AI, Software, and Deep Tech: how the technology works, who the players are, where value is likely to accrue, and what would have to be true for a company to win
• Turn that research into investment theses that shape where the team spends its time
• Run diligence on live opportunities, including technical evaluation, customer and expert calls, competitive analysis, and financial and cohort work
• Write investment memos and present recommendations to the investment committee
• Track companies in your coverage areas and surface the ones worth meeting
• Support portfolio companies on recruiting, introductions, fundraising, and strategy

QUALIFICATIONS

• 1-3 years of experience in investment banking, private equity, consulting, or venture investing, or in engineering or product at a technology company
• Ability to learn a technical market quickly and form a clear view of it
• Strong analytical skills, including financial analysis
• Clear, direct writing; you will write memos the team relies on
• Real interest in how technology works
• Willingness to form your own views and defend them

Preferred: technical training or hands-on technical experience, or prior research or diligence work in a venture or growth investing role.
