Community Manager — Healthcare Shares
Location: New York City preferred / Hybrid or Remote
Company: Healthcare Shares
Role Type: Full-Time
About Healthcare Shares
Healthcare Shares is a venture capital firm and healthcare entrepreneurship community focused on bringing together healthcare professionals, founders, investors, executives, and innovators.
Alongside our investment activities, we operate a growing community of approximately 2,000 healthcare professionals interested in entrepreneurship, startups, investing, and innovation.
Our goal is to grow Healthcare Shares into a community of 100,000 healthcare professionals while making the community an increasingly valuable resource for the founders and companies we invest in.
We are looking for an entrepreneurial, highly social, and creative Community Manager to help us build that community.
The Role
The Community Manager will be responsible for growing, engaging, and activating the Healthcare Shares community.
This is much more than a social media or event-planning position.
You will help build an ecosystem around Healthcare Shares that connects healthcare professionals with founders, investors, mentors, potential customers, employers, and business opportunities.
You will also work closely with our venture capital team and portfolio companies to figure out how the Healthcare Shares community can help our founders grow their businesses.
The ideal candidate is someone who loves bringing people together, creating interesting experiences, building relationships, and thinking creatively about how a professional community can create value.
Responsibilities
Community Growth
- Develop and execute strategies to grow Healthcare Shares from approximately 2,000 members to 100,000 members.
- Recruit healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, investors, executives, and other relevant members into the community.
- Grow membership through LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, newsletters, partnerships, events, referrals, and other channels.
- Develop referral programs, ambassador programs, partnerships, and other creative strategies for community growth.
- Identify healthcare organizations, universities, medical schools, business schools, professional associations, and other communities that could become distribution or community partners.
- Track membership growth, engagement, event participation, referrals, and other key community metrics.
Supporting Our Portfolio Companies
A major part of this role will be helping our portfolio companies take advantage of the Healthcare Shares community.
Responsibilities will include:
- Help portfolio companies identify and connect with potential customers within the Healthcare Shares network.
- Introduce founders to healthcare executives, clinicians, operators, employers, health systems, insurers, and other potential customers or strategic partners.
- Help entrepreneurs identify and connect with potential investors within the community.
- Promote fundraising announcements and portfolio company milestones to relevant members.
- Work with founders to identify specific ways the community can help accelerate their businesses.
- Create opportunities for portfolio companies to present products, conduct customer discovery, recruit pilot customers, or receive feedback from healthcare professionals.
- Feature portfolio company founders through events, podcasts, newsletters, and social media.
- Help portfolio companies recruit employees by distributing job opportunities throughout the Healthcare Shares community.
- Maintain a regular portfolio company jobs board or job-posting program for community members.
- Create programs that encourage members to become customers, advisors, mentors, employees, investors, or partners of Healthcare Shares portfolio companies.
The goal is to make the Healthcare Shares community a meaningful competitive advantage for the companies we invest in.
Events & Community Programming
You will be responsible for creating a regular calendar of high-quality events that bring the healthcare entrepreneurship ecosystem together.
Examples include:
- Startup pitch nights where founders present their companies to members of the Healthcare Shares community.
- Founder and investor networking events.
- Co-founder speed dating events.
- Mentor/entrepreneur speed dating events.
- Healthcare startup networking nights.
- Founder dinners and roundtables.
- Educational workshops and panels.
- Investor Q&A sessions.
- Customer discovery events where startups can meet potential users and buyers.
- Career and recruiting events for portfolio companies.
You will also:
- Identify and recruit compelling speakers, including business school professors, founders, venture capitalists, healthcare executives, physicians, and industry experts.
- Manage event logistics, invitations, speakers, venues, registration, promotion, and follow-up.
- Develop creative new event formats that encourage members to build meaningful professional relationships.
Healthcare Shares Podcast & Content
- Identify interesting healthcare entrepreneurs, investors, executives, professors, and innovators to feature on the Healthcare Shares Podcast.
- Interview founders and industry leaders about healthcare entrepreneurship, venture capital, innovation, and company building.
- Feature portfolio company founders and their stories.
- Turn podcast interviews, events, and community discussions into content for LinkedIn, Instagram, newsletters, and other channels.
- Identify interesting stories and insights emerging from the Healthcare Shares community that can become original content.
Community Engagement
Growing the number of members is only part of the job. The Community Manager will also be responsible for making the community useful.
You will:
- Regularly communicate with members to understand what they are looking for.
- Connect members with each other when there is a clear opportunity for collaboration.
- Help members find co-founders, mentors, investors, jobs, advisors, and business opportunities.
- Encourage experienced founders and executives to mentor newer entrepreneurs.
- Identify highly engaged members who could become ambassadors or leaders within the community.
- Develop programs that encourage members to participate rather than simply subscribe to an email list.
- Celebrate successful introductions, investments, hires, partnerships, and companies that emerge from the community.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is highly social, organized, creative, resourceful, and entrepreneurial.
You may be a great fit if you:
- Love meeting people and building relationships.
- Naturally enjoy connecting people who should know each other.
- Are comfortable reaching out to founders, investors, professors, physicians, executives, and other senior professionals.
- Are confident hosting events and interviewing entrepreneurs.
- Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Understand social media and how professional communities grow online.
- Are highly organized and capable of managing multiple events, campaigns, and projects simultaneously.
- Enjoy experimenting with unconventional ideas for growing and engaging communities.
- Are interested in healthcare, startups, entrepreneurship, and venture capital.
- Understand that a great community is about creating value for its members—not simply accumulating followers.
- Are comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment with significant independence and ownership.
Experience in venture capital, startups, healthcare, community management, events, podcasting, social media, or marketing is helpful but not required.
What Success Looks Like
Success in this role means building Healthcare Shares into one of the most important healthcare entrepreneurship communities in the country.
You will help us:
- Grow from approximately 2,000 members toward 100,000 members.
- Build a highly engaged community rather than simply a large mailing list.
- Create a consistent calendar of compelling healthcare startup events.
- Bring prominent founders, investors, professors, executives, and healthcare leaders into the community.
- Generate introductions between founders and potential customers.
- Generate introductions between founders and potential investors.
- Help our portfolio companies recruit talented employees from the community.
- Help portfolio companies find customers, advisors, partners, and pilot opportunities.
- Create opportunities for members to meet co-founders, mentors, investors, and collaborators.
- Build a successful Healthcare Shares podcast featuring leaders across healthcare and entrepreneurship.
- Create measurable business value for Healthcare Shares portfolio companies.
Ultimately, we want entrepreneurs to view the Healthcare Shares community as one of the most valuable reasons to have Healthcare Shares as an investor.
Why Join Healthcare Shares?
This is an opportunity to help build both a venture capital platform and a major healthcare entrepreneurship community.
You will interact directly with healthcare founders, venture capitalists, physicians, executives, professors, and operators while helping emerging healthcare companies grow.
You will also have significant freedom to experiment.
If you have an idea for a founder dinner, pitch competition, healthcare hackathon, investor event, co-founder matching program, podcast series, recruiting event, or new way to connect startups with customers, we want you to try it.
Rather than inheriting an established community, you will have the opportunity to help define what Healthcare Shares becomes as we grow from thousands to potentially 100,000 healthcare professionals.
One especially important addition is the idea that the community should become a competitive advantage for the VC fund—founders should want Healthcare Shares on their cap table because you can help them find customers, investors, talent, advisors, and partners. That makes the Community Manager role much more strategic than simply “running a community.”
