Founded in 1864 and headquartered in Oslo, Norway, the parent group traces its origins to a mutual membership organization established by Norway's mutual marine insurance clubs, with a founding purpose of safeguarding life, property and the environment through a uniform set of rules for ship classification and maritime safety.
