Our Focus is Driven by Our Beliefs

These problems are complex and intertwined - there is no silver bullet. We constantly need to consider that new solutions can create new vulnerabilities. Our belief is that private markets can and will play a meaningful role in addressing these truths.

  • Climate Change: Climate change is a global crisis and addressing it must be a priority.
  • Mental Health & Addiction: We need to reduce the stigma and improve outcomes associated with mental health and addiction treatment.
  • Behavioral Health & Wellness: Healthcare must work for the patient.
  • Education: Learning is a lifelong journey - access to it should be universally attainable to all.
  • Basic Needs: Everyone should have access to high-quality and affordable clean air and water, power, real food, education, and care.
  • Fundamental Safety: Safety is a basic right - no one should ever be made to feel unsafe.
  • Technology Drives Scale: Technology should play a role in cost-effective scaling.
  • Data Can Accelerate Adoption: We should use data to figure out what is working and accelerate adoption.

We Only Invest in Companies Where There is a Direct Relationship Between Financial Outcomes and Measurable Social Impact

For City Light companies, the primary impact comes from their core products or solutions. How they make money is how they have impact.

We Support Companies at Seed Stage and Beyond

  • City Spark Investments: Our City Spark program invests in companies at the seed and pre-seed stages. We look for companies that can grow to City Light Series A investments.
  • City Light Investments: City Light invests in companies with at least $1mm in revenue, an exponential growth path and measurable social impact.

Spero Ventures

“Spero” is Latin for hope. We help founders build a hopeful future. We’re a team of former startup founders, operators, and investors from landmark companies including eBay and Tesla. We invest in determined founders building mission-driven technology companies in three focus areas: wellbeing; sustainability; learning, work, and play. We prefer to lead or co-lead a $3-$10M round (late seed or Series A). Our typical check is $2-$4M, and we reserve capital for follow-on. We are conviction-based investors who play the long game. How We Work With YouWe have the conviction to lead and price your round. We participate in follow-on funding and help with subsequent fundraising. Our concentrated portfolio approach allows us to engage deeply with our founders. We’re supportive throughout the life of a company. Every one of our founders has full access to the entire Spero Ventures team. We know some ideas take time to catch on, so we offer patient capital. We are calm and steady partners in uncertain times. We help companies scale to serve billions of customers. We’ve done this as operators and founders, and as advisors and board members. We connect our companies to a network of founders, advisors, coaches, domain experts, and executive talent. We build community by bringing founders and leaders together through our CEO Summits, Product Leader Summits, founder breakfasts, workshops and thought-provoking events. We offer expert-led workshops that help founders with brand/storytelling, sales/go-to-market, consumer growth, and fundraising. Our focus Wellbeing Agency over physical and mental health People deserve to be in control of their own physical and mental health. For that, they need new kinds of information and access to care. What devices, apps, tools and services will help people live longer, healthier, more vibrant lives? How can genomics help us better understand our world and ourselves, and contribute to new solutions? Companies that answer these questions will make life worth living. Sustainability Protecting and preserving our planet Life is worth living on a healthy planet. But many of the largest systems we rely on - water, food, energy, transportation, product production and waste - were designed in a way that’s unsustainable and detrimental to our personal and planetary health. The economic, social, and health impacts of climate change and industrial pollution are growing too large to ignore: unprecedented droughts, fires and floods have disrupted millions of lives and result in billions of dollars of loss each year. How can we develop safer, more efficient systems? What can we do to improve power grids, recycling, environmental monitoring and disaster analytics? We invest in sustainability with conviction. Learning, Work, and Play Freedom in work and life Savoring relationships, art, joy, and laughter makes life worth living. Today, the way we do these things is changing. We can now learn, work, and play in hybrid ways that suit individual needs. This means self-directed learners need access to education and job preparation. Likewise, self-directed workforces need freedom, flexibility, and the ability to manage their goals. How can we provide better access to rewarding, satisfying work? What tools and support systems do people need to thrive? We invest in powerful visions for the future of learning, work, and play.

Greentown Labs

At Greentown Labs, we see with clear eyes the universal challenge that climate change poses. And we meet it with an equally clear vision for solving the problem - in fact, it’s an amazing opportunity for ingenuity and collaboration. We are a climatetech startup incubator like you’ve never seen before. Founded by entrepreneurs, we’re bringing together startups, corporates, investors, politicians, and many others to shape our best future. We’re here because each solution becomes greater when combined with others in a community of changemakers. In this community, we build on ideas, connect disciplines, and foster creativity. As individuals, we take great pride in the fact that we’re each playing a role in achieving our mission. And when we step back and look at the full scale of work being done here together - in this engine of possibility - we feel grateful, inspired, and relentlessly optimistic. Because we know that, no matter what, we’re going to get this done. A Community Committed to Climate Our members, our partners, and our staff are united by a common mission: solving the climate crisis through entrepreneurship and collaboration. Whether you’re a startup founder or a policymaker or an investor or a corporate executive, this is the place where you can take climate action. Our community wants to change the way people think about, engage with, and use energy. We want to change how we build our buildings, how we get around our cities and towns, how we grow our food, how we manage our water. We believe in the power of entrepreneurs in the climate battle. And we’re confident that when combined with support and amplification from corporates, politicians, private citizens, and others, climatetech startups will drive progress. We aim to be the leading hub where people from all over the world congregate to work toward the shared goal of a sustainable, renewable future. Our Incubation Model Greentown Labs aims to be a supportive, collaborative, and inspiring community for early-stage entrepreneurs to grow their businesses. In light of that mission, we don’t take any equity in our member companies. Instead, members pay monthly fees based on their lab and office space. We bring in revenue from other sources, including partnerships and grants, to keep membership fees low for our startups. Membership fees are approximately market rate, but include so much more than desk and lab space - members also gain access to more than $1 million worth of resources, equipment, programming, staff support, and more.

Town Hall Ventures

At Town Hall Ventures, we seek to partner with entrepreneurs who are as passionate as we are about changing our health care system. When we invest, we will make a substantial commitment of our time, network and resources to support entrepreneurs and their investors through the ups and downs of building successful companies. It’s why we choose to invest in fewer opportunities than most and only in the most impactful - focusing all of our energy working side-by-side with our partners to create and scale the breakthrough companies that will transform health care. Our Mission Using innovation to fix health inequities. Those fortunate enough to be born in the right zip code live longer and healthier lives than those in communities next door. Systemically, people who represent diverse racial, ethnic and gender identities, especially when combined with lower socioeconomic status, experience substantially worse health outcomes in the United States. These inequities in health - physical, mental and social determinants - result in individual, community and national struggles. When we provide great health care to the least fortunate, we are benefiting our entire societal fabric. We have an opportunity to shift investment away from nice-to-have ideas to proven solutions that improve care for populations that have long been underserved. Innovations aimed at improving care have been slow to come to areas that need it most, including: primary care, mental health, addiction, end-of-life care, kidney care, maternity and newborn health. The costs of ignoring these issues are carried by everyone. Enter the mission-driven entrepreneur. Over the past few years, innovative health care delivery approaches that serve Medicare populations have begun to emerge. Entrepreneurs have brought a new focus on reinvigorating primary care and pushing care into more comfortable settings. These models are just getting started, touching only 2% of the Medicare population today, but have tremendous potential to transform health for millions more. Thanks to an improved set of incentives, similar innovation is now coming to Medicaid. Entrepreneurs are beginning to focus on the needs of this population with the goal of dramatically improving health outcomes for patients and providing value to the hospitals, managed care plans, and State and Federal governments who care for them. Companies who create effective solutions to these challenges have the opportunity to improve the lives of 120 million Americans.
