CEI Ventures

About

For nearly 30 years, we have successfully identified and cultivated growth-oriented businesses that create good jobs for people living in areas overlooked by traditional VC firms. We finance and help to grow businesses that pay a living wage, provide basic benefits and host a fair and engaging workplace that offers opportunities for training and advancement.

We view our investment relationships as collaborative partnerships. In addition to capital investment, we are actively involved in our portfolio companies – bringing our knowledge of socially responsible management practices and working together with our parent company, CEI, to introduce workforce development specialists along with environmental, technical assistance and consulting relationships.

We focus our investments on dynamic, socially minded companies that exhibit a dual potential for high growth and positive community impact, particularly those that:

  • Create good jobs and wealth building opportunities for workers with an emphasis on jobs targeted to people with low-to-moderate incomes, in alignment with CEI’s Good Jobs Framework.
  • Are located in markets with more limited access to equity capital including rural areas and small cities.
  • Are led by individuals underserved by the current equity markets, including people of color, women and veterans.
  • Increase the availability of environmentally sustainable products/services that preserve natural resources, reduce waste/pollution or increase the adoption of renewable energy/clean technology.

Strong investment candidates will also exhibit:

  • Create good jobs and wealth building opportunities for workers with an emphasis on jobs targeted to people with low-to-moderate incomes, in alignment with CEI’s Good Jobs Framework.
  • Prospects for attractive returns with an appealing market opportunity, realistic projections, appropriate valuation, and pragmatic exit plan.
  • A competitive advantage through proprietary interest in technology, intellectual property, distribution system or other unique attribute.
  • A deep commitment to social benefits including quality employment opportunities and environmental stewardship. Each portfolio company is required to sign a social agreement, securing a commitment to promote CEI’s mission.
  • A viable exit plan within a reasonable time frame.

Reinventure Capital

Led by veteran impact investor Edward Dugger III and serial pioneer Julianne Zimmerman, Reinventure Capital is a high-impact, high-return venture practice. Our investment thesis:There prevail in plain sight existing and emerging networks of innovative entrepreneurs, many of whom are Black, Indigenous, and other people of color and/or womxn of all identities, overlooked by mainstream investors. They are leading scalable for-profit businesses with demonstrated commercial traction and social and environmental impact, yet starved of capital to grow. Providing this untapped pool with expansion-stage capital will produce strong, non-concessionary returns for shareholders and intentional, measurable benefits for stakeholders. We pursue this thesis by:Cultivating a more vibrant and equitable ecosystem. Reaching out to womxn and people of color, engaging our networks to connect with innovative entrepreneurs building scalable businesses and investors investing for better. Targeting innovators who are radically changing their segments, building businesses that deliver profitable and scalable interventions to persistent impediments to present-day and future well-being. Selecting entrepreneurs who are in fragmented industries, at the forefront of one or more unfolding shifts, and growing profitably; as a result, they are positioned to become #1 or #2 in their market segment, improve EBITDA by 30-40%, and self-fund reinvestment. Collaborating to drive impact at every stage of our involvement. Each investment we make is a pact with the founders to achieve impact we agree on together. We seek to create close alignment before we invest, encode that alignment in deal structure and terms, and maintain alignment by keeping a clear-eyed focus on our shared commitment.

We are an anti-disciplinary group of thinkers, founders, entrepreneurs, and practitioners who believe that market forces can power great ideas to drastically increase economic opportunity. We believe that market forces can power great ideas to drastically expand economic opportunity. Guided by the best evidence and leading research on what drives economic mobility, we invest in people and ideas that can succeed in and transform those markets. We are active partners to talented, mission-driven entrepreneurs. Our entrepreneurs receive seed funding, space, support, and access to a world-class team of advisors and researchers who provide strategic advice on how to build a highly successful business and maximize social impact. WHY WE DO IT There are stark gaps in opportunity in America. One-third of black men without a high school education are in prison on any given day. The median earnings gap between blacks and whites is the same as it was in 1950s. Life expectancy today for blacks is what is was for whites in the 1980s. The racial achievement gap is the same now as it was in the 1980s. We invest in entrepreneurs and ideas that have the potential to close these gaps and greatly increase opportunity in America.

Aisiki Capital

This is expected to create significant financial and social returns. Aisiki focuses on women and youth led companies, as well as companies with a developmental impact stemming from the belief that this represents the greatest potential for job creation and economic development. The name Aisiki means “prosperity” in the Yoruba language. It was inspired by the strength, diligence and resilience commonly demonstrated by women across the continent from all walks of life as they constantly seek opportunities to uplift, provide for and build their homes, families, communities and individual capabilities. As an impact fund, Aisiki believes that a holistic model, which recognises the requirement to address all stakeholders when structuring investment opportunities, is a critical element of successful investing in developing economies. A key differentiator for Aisiki Impact Fund when compared to tradition debt and equity funds will be the strategic role the fund will play to place social impact at the core of everything we do.
