About

Artesian invests in technology startups that can deliver outsize returns and impact at scale by solving the world’s critical problems.

We are one of the Asia Pacific region’s most active early-stage venture capital investors, with a portfolio of over 625 startups (pre-seed to Series A) focused on climate, agrifood, health, artificial intelligence & robotics, education, and gender equality.

Our later-stage continuation funds (Series B to growth) invest in the top startups from this unique pre-screened and de-risked pipeline and provide additional co-investment opportunities to our LPs.

The iconic outback windmill logo represents our mission to tap unrecognized value and deliver sustainable performance in challenging environments.

Artesian manages money for government organizations, pension and superannuation funds, insurance companies, corporations and industry groups, financial planners and family offices.

Artesian’s foundational belief is that a sustainable and scalable VC business depends on unfettered access to a diversified pipeline of high quality early-stage opportunities.

Artesian achieves this via:

  1. Network: Unparalleled network of >625 existing portfolio companies, >1,500 founder alumni
  2. Commitment: Early-stage venture capital is part of Artesian's DNA. We have been building our early-stage platform and networks for more than 10 years, in Australia, China and across the Asia Pacific region
  3. Specialization: Sector specialization is central to our investment strategy and alpha generation. Artesian operates as a multi-strategy manager with Portfolio Managers responsible for specific verticals, sectors and thematics
  4. Experience: Deep domain experience has enabled first-mover advantage, with Artesian launching Australia’s first dedicated VC funds for clean energy, agrifood, medical devices, AI & Robotics, and female founders
  5. Collaboration: Long-established partnerships with regional accelerators, incubators, university programs, angel groups, industry groups, corporations and government organizations

From great entrepreneurs emerge great brands and companies. We are good listeners and that is a trait needed in our profession to grow. We have a non-intrusive approach and we completely believe in the entrepreneurs we have backed. An entrepreneur can think of us more as a resource and a sounding board. WHAT WE LOOK FORWe prefer to invest in mission driven founders who have relevant work experience and domain expertise Significant growth potential over the next 3 to 5 years. We prefer backing founders with at least 4-5 years of prior experience. Differentiated products or services that have strong ‘moats’ built around it. HOW WE INVESTWe invest in pre-seed and seed rounds. We invest ~US$ 250K per startup in the first round and then in follow-on rounds We are open to investing through convertible structures and instruments, however, we prefer straight equity. We generally prefer to co-invest along with other VC funds and micro VC funds In a larger round of fundraising – we co-invest with our select Limited Partners.

Invest-NL

The Netherlands needs to become more sustainable and more innovative. This requires dedication, patience and capital. But above all, it requires entrepreneurs - genuine entrepreneurs with genuinely good plans for the Netherlands of the future. We are here to finance those genuinely good plans. We are Invest-NL, impact investors, and we make tomorrow possible. Pleased to meet you! About us The Netherlands needs to become more sustainable and more innovative. We will make the difference. We aim to make an impact by seeking a return. We are not afraid to go for opportunities that others decide against. This is because we are prepared to take risks, we are able to wait longer for our money than others, and we have access to European funds. But also because we are passionate and motivated, we are professional and competent, and we believe in our mission. We provide encouragement, speed things up, create opportunities and remove obstacles. We enable financing for businesses and projects that seem impossible to finance. Rather than competing with others, we work together with them, and this enables us to achieve more than any of us could have done on our own. By taking risk ourselves, we reduce the risks for others. We are an open organisation that thinks broadly and looks ahead. When we look ahead to 2050, the economy we see is radically different from today’s economy. We see an economy that pays greater attention to people, the environment, society and our shared future. This cannot be achieved without major social transitions, confidence in opportunities and long-term thinking. This is something we are responsible for. The entrepreneurs who will create the Netherlands of tomorrow may only just be starting out. The technology that will be required is still in its infancy. This is where we come in and where we will make a difference. We cannot do this alone, nor would we want to. You are welcome to join us in achieving this aim. Welcome to the Netherlands of tomorrow. Focus areas Our ambition is to make the Netherlands more sustainable and more innovative. We aim to achieve this by financing projects and businesses, as well as by providing advice and/or carrying out research on how to enable financing for business cases. As an impact investor, we always focus on the social returns throughout the entire chain. This allows us to gain insight and expertise. This involves learning, making adjustments, reformulating, and refining. Our current market focus has six focus areas. Biobased & Circular Economy: The Netherlands' target is to be 50% circular by 2030 and 100% circular by 2050. We therefore view circularity as a social transition. We research and support the development of markets in which circular solutions can flourish, and we invest in companies that contribute towards these goals. Carbon-neutral economy: The transition to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050 requires radical innovations and is our top priority. AgriFood: The transition towards a sustainable, climate-neutral food system and value chain is key to our strategy. Radical innovations and an integrated strategy are required in order to work towards a circular model with innovative technologies and business models that can accelerate the transition. Deep Tech: For Deep Tech, we launched the specialised Deep Tech Fund (DTF). This fund is particularly interested in start-ups and scale-ups with innovative complex technology that offers solutions to societal challenges. Investments are often made in new, as yet unproven technologies that bear relatively high risks. Life sciences & health: The Dutch healthcare system is not sustainable in its current form. Without intervention, healthcare costs will double by 2040 and one in four Dutch people will have to work in healthcare. This calls for a transition to a different healthcare system. Investment funds: We want to give fast-growing SMEs (start-ups and scale-ups) more and improved access to risk capital. That is why we make investments, some of which are in collaboration with the European Investment Fund (EIF).

KIATT

We believe the most valuable companies of our time will be those taking on the greatest global challenges. Since 2003 we have a dedicated team that focuses in addressing the greatest challenges by investing in the most inspiring minds of our time and the intellectual property they generate. At Kiatt, we have a strong conviction that investment, in all its forms, is a creative force capable of bringing visionary projects to life. Climate Tech & Sustainability The goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 translates to an exponential pathway of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half every decade. Increased awareness and acceptance of climate change, combined with maturing technologies and blossoming market opportunities, have led many entrepreneurs and investors to turn their focus to climate tech. Innovation and technology are the best hope for an enduring future. Agri-Food of the future We are already seeing the effects of a growing global population and climate change on global food security and environment. These are only some of the issues sparking on an urgent need for solutions that ensure access to nutritious & safe food, enhance biodiversity, and leave a minimal trace on the environment. AI & Cybersecurity These sectors present significant growth prospects. AI involves creating computer systems that simulate human intelligence in tasks such as perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. The AI industry is projected to reach a global market size of $267 billion by 2027. On the other hand, cybersecurity protects systems, networks, and data from unauthorized access and disruption, with an expected market size of $363 billion by 2025. Health and Quality of Life Between right now and 2050, the percentage of the global population over 65 will nearly triple, and this aging population is already increasingly demanding solutions. Across industries there is a push for technologies that will not only allow this population to live longer, but to increase their quality of life.

Katapult

We accelerate and invest in tech companies solving the world’s greatest challenges. This is representing the fastest growing markets and therefore the greatest business opportunities. We have so far invested in 146 companies from 47 different countries. In brief Katapult is an investment company, focused on highly scalable impact tech startups. We currently have invested in 146 companies across 47 countries. Our accelerator programs strengthen our investment in highly-promising impact tech startups. Since 2017, we have conducted 10 flagship accelerator programs and 3 corporate accelerators. We established the Katapult Foundation in 2020, gathering our non-profit initiatives under one arm. The Foundation is focusing on building the impact community and education efforts around impact investment. Initiatives include Katapult Future Fest, Katapult X and the Nordic Investment Network. Scale profit and impact There has never been a better time for tech impact startup investments – and to scale profit and impact you need a platform. “Tech” because software has been eating the world for more than a decade, disruptions are everywhere, and we have only seen the beginning. It represents a global transition of business development and culture more impactful than the industrial revolution. Over the last years we have seen that tech can have tremendous negative and positive consequences, and our mission is to use tech for good. “Impact” because all of the biggest challenges the world meet today, from the consequences of splinternett, to a global political attention directed towards sustainability goals, are driving a global trend. If we direct it right, it is both going to make impact investing mainstream, and therefore an outperforming asset class – on the right side of the future. “Startups” because there has been a shift in where new technologies and innovations arise. Particularly if you want to solve large problems. It used to be within established large corporations, and now, the fastest moving and most impactful solutions are built by entrepreneurs. Startup ecosystems are leading innovation. That trend has accelerated over the last decade, spread to all corners of the world, and we have only seen the beginning. “Investment” because all of the new solutions that need to be built require an enormous transition of capital into new industrial solutions, ranging from climate-tech, ocean-tech agri-and food-tech, ed-tech, health-tech, food-and agri-tech – to all things tech. The biggest challenges humanity faces today are also the fastest growing markets, represents an unique investment opportunity, and requires huge investments to solve. “Platform” because to solve big challenges you need to scale, build lots of companies, make many bets, and bring in capital and talents from everywhere. One single great investment can be great, but it takes a platform – an investment machinery – to really make a difference. This year Katapult will reach 100+ tech – impact – startup – investments and we got there by building a platform, and in the next decade we will build it better. Leading because… otherwise we should do something else. History Katapult was founded by active impact investor Tharald Nustad in 2016. The intention was to go beyond investing his own resources to create vehicles and raise awareness to catalyse more investors to move into impact investing and use technologies ‘to build the world we want to live in’. Katapult has now established itself as the leading player in impact tech in the Nordics. In a short period of time we have invested in more than 138 tech impact startups through our vehicles and put the Katapult Future Fest on the map as the event to go to for impact and tech in Europe.
