How we work

We do…

  • Invest in a small number of well-selected companies per year. We’re happy to back a handful of companies – two, three or maybe four – a year – and focus all our energy on helping them succeed. Our goal is to – through helping the founders – meaningfully improve the chance that each of our invested start-ups will survive and thrive. That can only be done if we can dedicate ourselves fully to each one of our investments and maintain our sharp focus.
  • Get deeply, actively involved post-investment. We support our portfolio start-ups across all dimensions of the business – whether that means advising on strategic decisions, opening doors to new customers, hiring, improving the product, sharing technical knowledge or simply being a sounding board for the founders during brainstorming. Our founders ALWAYS come first – we don’t see a reason why we should be looking for new business, until we’ve done everything we can for the companies we’ve already backed.
  • Put our money where our mouth is – investing purely our own capital. We’re investing our own money – that we made as founders, entrepreneurs and investors. While we have a clear investment strategy, we have no artificial institutional limits on what we can or cannot do and face no external pressures – thus we don’t shy away from more complex situations or non-consensus investments. We are always happy to talk about a great opportunity and we will never pass just because we filled our quota for the year.

We don’t…

  • Invest in industries, problems and companies we do not understand. Our focus is on the logistics, e-commerce and fintech industries; with a preference for B2B or B2B2C business models. We’ve built companies in these spaces ourselves before becoming investors and we’d rather have narrow, but deep industry knowledge and networks that we can offer up to you. We rarely stray from these industries – and if we do, it is always because of a specific unique insight or experience, never because a deal or a sector was hot.
  • Outsource our conviction and analysis – and we are happy to be the first “yes”! We don’t invest based on who else is investing – instead we love to be the first beliver – the first institutional investor, the lead investor in your next round, the first one to say yes even if we’re not leading your round. Even if you’re not sure whether you’re ready for an investor, don’t hesitate to reach out – we’ll give you our honest opinion and guide you forward.
  • Ever stop helping our founders – even if the going gets tough. Don’t take our word for it – just ask any of our founders, or ask for an intro to one (or all) of them.

FJ Labs

FJ Labs’ investment approach stems from its roots. FJ Labs is the extension of Jose’s and my angel investing activities. We scaled our activities and processes, but we did not change the strategy. Most venture capital funds have very well-defined portfolio construction. They invest the funds they raised over a specific period, in a specific type of company, in a specific number of companies, investing a specific investment amount, at a specific stage, in a specific geography. These funds lead rounds and the partners take board seats. They reserve a certain amount of capital for follow-ons and typically do follow-on. Fund rules are such that subsequent funds cannot invest in the companies from the prior fund. The fund does extensive due diligence and invests in less than 7 deals per year. A typical $175 million dollar VC fund may look like this: US only Series A focus B2B SAAS companies only Invests $5-7M Series A lead checks Targeting investing in 20 companies over a 3-year period 40% of the capital reserved for follow-ons Follow-on in most of the portfolio companies Partners take board seats Investments take 2-4 months from first meeting FJ Labs does not operate this way. As we did when we were angels, we evaluate all the companies in our pipeline, and we invest in those we like. We decide whether we invest or not based on two 60-minute calls over the course of a week or two. We do not lead, and we do not take board seats. In other words, you could say we invest at any stage, in any geography, in any industry with extremely limited due diligence. Those are the very words that scared away institutional investors and made us think we would never raise a fund. Given this “strategy,” you might expect that our portfolio composition would vary dramatically over time. In fact, it has been very consistent over the years.
