The Role

The Growth Go-To-Market team is an important part of our effort to accelerate time-to-market across the a16z portfolio. We take a uniquely long-term view towards working with our founders and companies, while relentlessly focusing on the impact we can deliver. The Growth GTM team has a laser focus on 3 pillars: 

  1. Advise our portfolio companies on user growth: Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Monetization
  2. Develop and manage long term relationships with subject matter experts, vendors and talent 
  3. Define what best-in-class looks like by gathering industry trends, insight and benchmarks 

You will work closely with a16z’s Consumer companies’ across stages to kickstart their SEO program. This includes driving an understanding of best practices for new websites, auditing and improving existing websites, and educating scaled websites on long term SEO strategy. Successful candidates will be dynamic, empathetic, intellectually honest and willing to be hands-on with teams from seed to late stage companies.

  • Apply the core principles of great SEO across startup stages: From no code to scaled websites with millions of indexed pages
  • Tackle the full range of SEO strategies, ranging from: editorial content, programmatic content, user generated content, marketplaces, web apps / saas, or video.  
  • Follow industry trends, algorithm changes, emergent tools and communicate their implications to the portfolio companies
  • Work alongside portfolio companies while building reusable frameworks for common tasks:
  • 1st party data analysis such as auditing traffic logs, crawl records, web analytics, search console reports to identify priorities
  • Technical site audits to identify critical issues in indexing, robots.txt, sitemaps, duplicate content, proper use of redirects, etc
  • Keyword research, opportunities analysis and frameworks for stack ranking initiatives
  • Define SEO KPIs and the automation of dashboards 
  • Troubleshooting causes of sudden organic traffic declines and other risk factors
  • Create scalable content that can be shared with the industry based on frequently asked questions and issues that we encounter often
  • Work collaboratively across a16z general partners, deal team, marketing, and go to market network

Minimum Qualifications

  • 6+ years of proven SEO experience working in-house on businesses with scaled SEO traffic in Tech, Marketplace, Media, or Consumer businesses
  • 2+ years working directly with technical teams or in SEO Product organizations
  • Track record of execution on both quick wins as well as long term SEO projects
  • Ability to read, write, and troubleshoot basic JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
  • Familiarity with no code tools such as Webflow, Typeform a plus
  • Direct experience with common SEO tools: Botify, Screaming Frog, GSC, Wordtracker, Brightedge, SEM Rush, etc… 
  • Have created deliverables, requirements documents, specs or equivalent documentation for on-page SEO, technical SEO, search engine ranking factors, best practices across keyword research, URL structures, page markup, schemas, crawlers and other ranking factors
  • Experience with communication and hosting workshops to evangelize SEO to both Marketers and Technical teams. Can advocate, educate, and break through rigid or dated SEO beliefs 
  • Experience with site migrations, merging acquired businesses, launching international a plus
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience building or directing automation of SEO dashboards to oversee site health and identify issues a plus
  • App store optimization experience a plus 
  • Outstanding written, verbal and presentation skills
