The Role

The Business Development Lead, Life Sciences will own the verticals time-to-market for the a16z portfolio. This strategic leader will advise portfolio teams on their go-to-market strategy across sales, marketing, and business development. Additionally, help build commercial and strategic partnership opportunities for the portfolio with our network of Global 2000 executives, privately held companies, and federal agencies. Ultimately, the team’s goal is to support each portfolio company in its pursuit of product-market-fit and scaled commercialization.

As a Business Development Lead, you will be responsible for (1) building direct relationships with the most influential Life Sciences business leaders, (2) advising a16z Bio/Health portfolio companies with key go-to-market initiatives, (3) crafting strategic business development opportunities for portfolio companies.

  • Develop the strategy for growing a16z’s corporate network with the most forward-leaning life sciences companies 
  • Lead development and management of executive-level relationships across top life sciences industry leaders, driving opportunities for collaboration with a16z and advising them on how new technologies can accelerate their business strategy
  • Accelerate go-to-market initiatives and key customer opportunities for our portfolio companies as they grow from early product development through to scaled distribution
  • Develop strategic partnerships between leading care delivery organizations and a16z portfolio companies
  • Advise portfolio companies on business development, commercial agreements and negotiation strategies
  • Help shape the culture and continued success of the Business Development team and the a16z bio vertical

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10+ years of business development and/or strategic partnerships (or equivalent) experience working with life sciences organizations
  • Extensive background in developing long-term business relationships with Chief Executive Officers, Chief Strategy Officers, Chief Medical Officers, Chief Financial Officers or other senior leaders across Care Delivery sub-verticals
  • Have a high degree of comfort in leading presentations to large audiences and steering conversations 1:1 with senior executives
  • You are self-motivated and take a structured and data-driven approach to problem-solving
  • You are a collaborative teammate who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • You are passionate about new technology, and knowledgeable about emerging growth areas across care delivery
  • You have respect and empathy for the entrepreneurial struggle, and as such, you are eager to coach, counsel, and support entrepreneurs of all stages with both compassion and deep expertise
